What are we looking for?

We are looking for a senior Head of Research to lead our equity research function, with primary responsibility for driving investment research and for overseeing the overall quality and governance of our research output. This role is required to meet the head of regulated activity / Head of Research requirements under the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), including holding or qualifying for a Capital Markets Services Representative’s Licence (CMSRL).

Key Responsibilities:

1. Research leadership & governance

  • Lead the overall equity research agenda, ensuring research activities and outputs comply with SC Malaysia’s Licensing Handbook, investment advise / investment analyst guidelines and internal policies.
  • Set research priorities, coverage strategy and house views for APAC and US equities.
  • Review, challenge and sign off research reports, models and recommendations to ensure analytical rigor, consistency and regulatory compliance.

2. Equity Research – Financial Modelling, Valuation & Reporting

  • Build, develop and maintain comprehensive financial models for equities under coverage, including detailed P&L, balance sheet, capital, asset quality and valuation frameworks.
  • Perform in‑depth financial, valuation and peer analysis to generate high‑conviction, strategy‑appropriate investment recommendations.
  • Produce high‑quality research reports, including company initiations, earnings updates, thematic and sector pieces, with clear, actionable conclusions for institutional investors.

3. Thought leadership, content & investor education

  • Lead the creation of impactful research content (flagship reports, thematic pieces, strategy notes, newsletters, webinars and videos).
  • Champion investor education, helping clients understand sector dynamics, risks and opportunities to support better long‑term investment decisions.
  • Collaborate with Marketing / Distribution to tailor content for multiple channels (client meetings, conferences, media, digital platforms) while safeguarding research independence.

4. Client, market & external engagement

  • Cultivate strong relationships with institutional clients, corporate management teams, exchanges and other market participants.
  • Attend and report on corporate events, earnings briefings, roadshows, company visits and industry conferences.
  • Respond to and manage client requests efficiently, taking full ownership of workflow and deliverables.
  • Act as a public spokesperson for the firm’s research views (media interviews, panel discussions, webinars, client calls), projecting credibility and professionalism

5.People leadership & culture

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of research analysts / associates; set clear expectations, provide continuous feedback, and support career development.
  • Promote a healthy risk, compliance and conduct culture
  • Foster a diverse, inclusive and collaborative research environment, valuing diversity of background, experience and thought.

Requirements
  • 8+ years of experience in the financial services industry focusing on research and content creation on the macro market and asset allocation, portfolio construction & optimisation and investment manager due diligence
  • Currently holds, or is fit & proper to hold, a CMSRL under the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007
  • Minimum a Degree or the equivalent in Business, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Mathematics or Engineering from a reputable university is desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, Chinese and Bahasa Malaysia; the ability to produce clear, concise, well‑structured research in tight timelines.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial markets and products
  • Comfortable writing but also in front of camera or press
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills is essential
  • Have a good team ethic and ability to build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • A deep passion, commitment, and motivation for building market knowledge and investment expertise
  • Results-oriented with the ability to multi-task to manage various and potentially fast-changing priorities
  • Prior experience managing or mentoring analysts is strongly preferred.
