Here's what you'll be doing 

As the Head of Engineering, you will lead the engineering capability that underpins E.ON UK's digital products and services. Reporting to the UK Technology Delivery Director, you will shape the engineering strategy across Cloud Platforms, Frontend Engineering, SaaS Platforms, and Backend Engineering & Architecture, ensuring they operate as one connected engineering function. 

Working within a product-led, DevOps-enabled environment, you will enable the delivery of secure, scalable and reliable technology solutions that support millions of customers and colleagues. You'll play a key role in evolving our engineering capability, embedding modern engineering practices, supporting the adoption of AI-enabled delivery, and ensuring our technology estate continues to meet the needs of the UK business while aligning with E.ON Group standards. 

Working closely with leaders across Engineering, Product, AI and Data, you'll help build an engineering environment that enables teams to deliver high-quality technology at pace. 

Key responsibilities 

  • Lead the engineering strategy and delivery across Cloud Platforms, Frontend Engineering, SaaS Platforms, and Backend Engineering & Architecture. 

  • Build a connected engineering function by establishing consistent engineering standards, governance and ways of working across all engineering chapters. 

  • Ensure engineering services are secure, resilient and scalable, supporting E.ON UK's digital products, platforms and AI-enabled solutions. 

  • Embed modern software engineering and DevOps practices, using engineering performance measures, including DORA metrics, to support continuous improvement. 

  • Maximise the value of existing platforms, strategic technology partners and commercial solutions, adopting a buy-before-build approach where appropriate. 

  • Enable the adoption of AI-assisted engineering and automation to improve delivery, quality and the developer experience. 

  • Work collaboratively across engineering, architecture and product teams to make informed technical decisions that balance innovation, risk and business priorities. 

  • Partner closely with Product, AI and Data leaders to align engineering capacity, technical strategy and delivery plans. 

  • Lead and support a team of senior engineering leaders, creating an environment where people can develop, collaborate and perform at their best. 

  • Ensure engineering activities operate within appropriate governance, security, regulatory and risk management frameworks. 

What we need from you 

  • Significant experience leading software engineering functions within a complex enterprise technology environment. 

  • Experience leading senior engineering managers across multiple engineering disciplines and geographically distributed teams. 

  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms, software engineering, enterprise architecture or platform engineering, with experience delivering secure, resilient and scalable technology solutions. 

  • Experience developing engineering operating models, embedding DevOps practices and using engineering performance measures to improve delivery outcomes. 

  • Experience introducing AI-enabled capabilities into enterprise engineering environments and supporting their transition into secure production services. 

  • Commercial awareness, with experience balancing in-house engineering capability, strategic partners and commercial technology platforms to achieve the best business outcomes. 

  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a way that enables informed business decisions. 

  • Experience of engineering governance, technical risk management, security and regulatory requirements within a complex organisation. 

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to create an inclusive environment, develop others and build strong relationships across technology and business teams.

Skills Required

  • Significant experience leading software engineering functions within complex enterprise technology environments.
