JOB DESCRIPTION:
Officer position responsible for overall strategic direction, production and general management to drive underwriting excellence for CNA's Affinity Professional and Management Liability Programs (Large Law, Program Law, Accountants, Real Estate Services, Architects & Engineers, Community Associations and Management Liability). This individual will direct the development of the implementation strategy and operational objectives in accordance with the company's strategic plans, which include profitable growth in all areas.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
1. Partners with Global Financial Lines, Healthcare & Affinity Leader to develop strategic and operational plans that have a substantial impact on the short-term success of our Affinity Programs Business Unit and a significant impact on the long-term success of the company.
2. Develops and maintains close relationships to all MGA/MGU program partners (from leadership to underwriting teams) to the Affinity business unit.
3. Responsible for weekly accurate and detailed forecasting to Global Head of Affinity, Financial Lines and Healthcare. Responsible to improve efficiency and accuracy of forecasts and must work closely with MGA/MGU partners to effectuate results.
4. Oversees achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational by setting underwriting profitability and expense strategy.
5. Establishes strategic underwriting objectives, underwriting authority levels and product development direction.
6. Leads, directs and has full management accountability for US staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent management and succession planning in accordance with corporate strategic direction.
7. Oversees underwriting performance based on financial analysis. Includes rate, pricing adequacy, operational, planning and product reviews. Provides results to members of the executive management team and presents plans to resolve issues.
8. Establishes underwriting audit criteria for regions and branch offices to follow in accordance with corporate product line or segment and departmental standards.
9. Partners with senior management in Risk Control, Actuarial, Claim, Operations, and Compliance to address governance and compliance issues related to underwriting practices.
May perform additional duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. Extensive knowledge in underwriting discipline and other related disciplines in the insurance field and comprehensive understanding of critical issues in other related areas.
2. Extensive underwriting expertise with the ability to integrate knowledge across product lines and segments.
3. Advanced communication skills which are critical to building consensus across area of influence (external and/or internal relationships), team and/or matrix environment.
4. Superior leadership and management skills demonstrated integrity and professionalism.
5. Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving significant problems within scope of responsibility.
6. Extensive level knowledge of the insurance industry, it products and services.
7. Expertise in forecasting production on a regular detailed basis.
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in a related discipline, or equivalent.
2. Typically a minimum of 15 years of related underwriting experience, with 10 years management experience.
