The Role

This is a senior individual-ownership role reporting to the CFO. You will own the global accounting and tax function across n8n’s multi-entity international structure — covering statutory reporting, audit readiness, and cross-border tax compliance. The function is still being built. That’s the point.

This is a hard role because you are building, not maintaining.

If what you want is to join a well-oiled machine and optimise it at the margins, this isn’t the right fit. If you want the mandate, the visibility, and the tools to build an AI-native finance function the way you think it should be done, few places will give you that at this scale.

What You’ll Own

  • Statutory accounting and group consolidation across n8n’s international entity structure

  • Month-end and year-end close — improving cycle time and building scalable close processes

  • External audit management — owning the relationship and driving audit readiness year-round

  • Tax compliance and coordination across multiple jurisdictions — working with and challenging external advisors on transfer pricing, VAT, and corporate tax

  • ERP ownership and continuous improvement

  • Building and leading a small, high-quality accounting team

  • Defining what an AI-native accounting function looks like at n8n — and then building it

Must-Haves

This is a head of accounting role. Your core background is in statutory accounting, financial

reporting, and audit. If your background is primarily in financial planning, management reporting, business partnering, or German Controlling (the FP&A discipline), this is not the right fit — regardless of title. We mean accounting in the Anglo-Saxon sense: the books, the close, the statutory filings, the audit.

A scaling arc you’ve lived through

You have been part of a finance function during a period of rapid scaling — ideally Series B through to IPO readiness — and you understand what breaks at each stage of that journey. We’re not looking for someone who joined post-IPO and maintained a mature function, or someone who’s only operated pre-Series B. Strong number-two profiles and senior ICs who’ve had full exposure to a high-growth arc are welcome — you don’t need to have held the top title.

Qualified accountant

ACA, ACCA, CPA, or equivalent. HGB expertise alongside IFRS or US GAAP is a genuine differentiator given our German entity structure.

Multi-entity international experience

You’ve owned statutory reporting across multiple legal entities and jurisdictions. You’re comfortable with cross-border complexity — VAT, transfer pricing, group consolidation — and you know when to bring in external advisors and how to challenge them.

Tax literacy, not tax expertise

You do not need to be a tax specialist. What we need is someone who can hold their own with external tax advisors across multiple jurisdictions, understand the commercial implications of tax decisions, and know when to escalate. The expectation is intelligent oversight and challenge — not ownership of every technical detail. If you’re a strong accounting-led candidate with solid tax literacy, don’t let the word ‘Tax’ in the title put you off.

AI fluency — demonstrated, not theoretical

This is a first-principles filter, not a box-tick. You have used AI to materially change how you work — not just experimented with it — and you have a point of view on what an AI-native finance function looks like. We are not looking for someone who has ‘tried ChatGPT’. We want someone who has rebuilt part of how they work around these tools and has thought seriously about what that means for a finance function at scale.

Team leadership

You have built or managed an accounting team. Not just managed up — you’ve hired, developed, and led people. Clear upward career progression is required.

Strong Signals (Nice-to-Have)

  • Pre-IPO, IPO readiness, or PE-backed experience — you’ve been inside a company going through a liquidity event or preparing for one

  • Big 4 background before moving in-house — EY, Deloitte, PwC, or KPMG alumni in tech are a well-worn path to this role

  • ERP implementation or significant system change — NetSuite, SAP, or equivalent

  • Month-end close transformation — you’ve materially reduced close cycle time

  • SOX compliance or audit control environment design

  • Genuine product curiosity — you’ve built something with n8n before applying.

This is the rare moment where the company is large enough that your work matters at scale, and early enough that you’re shaping how it’s done. The finance function is not an afterthought here.

You will work directly with the CFO, have visibility across the business, and be part of deciding how a high-growth company manages its financial operations at a critical juncture. You will also have tools that most finance functions don’t: n8n itself, used by your own team, to automate and rebuild the work in ways that most finance leaders never get to explore. The trade-off is real: you are joining to build, not to coast. The ambiguity is genuine and the pace is high. If that’s the environment you do your best work in, this is worth a conversation.

Skills Required

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience in high-growth SaaS
  • 3+ years in a B2B SaaS environment with multi-entity operations
  • Strong international accounting knowledge including IFRS and SaaS revenue recognition
  • Hands-on experience with HGB financial statement preparation
  • Proven ability to manage relationships with auditors and tax advisors
  • Demonstrated practice using AI tools in accounting
