The Role:
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Hardware/FPGA Engineer will be instrumental in the design, development, testing and implementation of solutions specifically tailored for broadcast video and audio applications. Your responsibilities will encompass embedded system design including microprocessors/controllers, FPGA design through Verilog/VHDL coding, electronic and PCB design and collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate these solutions into our broadcast systems. Our production switchers are used worldwide for top tier programming in sports and live entertainment.
Primary responsibilities of the role include:
- Design and development of circuit board level solutions for broadcast video and audio applications, focusing on Embedded System hardware and electronic design.
- Develop RTL hardware systems using Verilog/VHDL. Implement the designs in FPGAs, and test, debug, verify and document the designs.
- Design and development of microprocessor-based systems for broadcast video and audio applications.
- Optimize existing FPGA designs to enhance video and audio processing and synchronization features.
- Conduct thorough simulation, testing, debugging, and verification of designs to ensure seamless functionality and adherence to industry standards.
- Maintain and improve FPGA build processes using CI/CD tools like Jenkins.
- Estimate work effort to establish schedules for design delivery.
- Stay updated on industry trends, emerging standards, and technologies related to broadcast video and audio.
- B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related degree or technical field.
- 0-5 years experience in electronics design and verification with strong focus on digital logic using FPGAs, and/or PCB level design, integration, and debug experience.
- Exposure to FPGA design and implementation using hardware description languages (HDL) such as VHDL or Verilog (preferred).
- Experience evaluating FPGA Synthesis and Implementation results to balance timing, power, area, and performance targets, and the use of constraints to manage these targets.
- Experience developing reusable HDL modules (VHDL/Verilog) and incorporating them into a larger system.
- Proficiency with the use of lab test equipment (Oscilloscopes, TDRs, network and spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers) for verifying and debugging designs.
- Experience with technical documentation: test plans, diagrams, functional descriptions, and design requirements.
- Familiarity with FPGA development tools such as Xilinx Vivado, or Altera Quartus.
- Familiarity with FPGA debug tools like Chipscope or SignalTap.
- Experience designing testbenches and working with RTL simulation tools (Modelsim, Questa preferred)
- Exposure to digital circuit design within embedded systems.
- Exposure to printed circuit board design tools and methods including schematic entry and layout.
- Familiarity with microprocessor-based systems and design methods.
- Experience with signal integrity management related to high-speed digital interfaces and mixed signal circuits.
- Knowledge of high-speed serial interfaces like PCIe, SDI, Ethernet, and USB, and parallel interfaces like DDR.
- Knowledge of communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, and CAN.
- Experience using scripting languages such as Python and programming languages such as C/C++.
- Understanding TCP/IP from network programming perspective.
- Ability to work on site at our R&D Facility in Nevada City, CA
- Ability to sit or stand for an extended period of time without aid
- Ability to lift up to 25lbs, unassisted.
