We’re looking for a passionate, highly skilled Hardware Engineer to join the Atlas Data Storage Hardware Engineering team.  The ideal candidate will support / enhance existing experimental systems and will collaborate closely with a group of Mechanical, Chemical, and Electrical engineers to develop new production hardware as Atlas continues to grow.

What you'll do

• Directly contribute to the development of novel hardware systems that enable rapid advancement of the Atlas CMOS chip-based DNA synthesis platform
• Collaborate with cross-functional team to design, build, test, and validate custom hardware systems / solutions
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues associated with existing Atlas systems
• Design and develop hardware for conducting feasibility studies / design validation
• Conduct experimental testing, collect data, and maintain documentation
• Assist with tooling / fixture design and lab implementation

Qualifications

• BS in Engineering (Mechanical / Bio) or related discipline
• 2-5 years’ experience in product development environment
• Experience with biotechnology processes related to DNA synthesis
• General understanding of basic electro-mechanical systems
• Hands on skills to assemble, test, validate, and troubleshoot custom equipment
• Familiar with CAD (Solidworks) and design control
• Excellent communication, organization, and writing skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced multi-discipline team environment

Preferred Experience

• Cross functional skills in mechanics, fluidics, electronics, optics, automation, software
• Familiar with tolerancing and machine shop fabrication / rapid prototyping techniques
• Experience with electronics / debugging
• Ability to work with and write control software scripts

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Work will be performed onsite in office and laboratory space located in South San Francisco.
• Mobility: Must be able to move about the laboratory and office environment regularly. This includes standing and walking for extended periods, often up to 6–8 hours per day.
• Manual Dexterity: Must have fine motor skills and steady hands to handle delicate instruments, operate laboratory equipment, pipette accurately, and perform repetitive benchwork with precision.
• Lifting/Carrying: Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds occasionally, such as boxes of lab supplies or equipment.
• Visual Acuity: Must have sufficient visual acuity to read small print on labels, instrument displays, and computer monitors. Close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus are required.
• Environmental Conditions: Frequently exposed to typical laboratory conditions, including biological samples, chemicals, and reagents. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and safety goggles as required.
