Job Description Summary
The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called Base Camp), which will be completed in 2026. Components of the new guest experience will include a state-of-the-art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space. A fully sustainable, on-brand hotel may also be built and operated by a third party on the campus. The capstone of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience in the courtyard.
NGS is seeking a Group Sales Manager to promote group experiences at Base Camp. This position will be responsible for the marketing, selling, and booking of a wide array of group visitors. The Group Sales Manager will bring their experience in tourism and demonstrate the ability to manage reservation requests and collaborate with internal teams to meet revenue and attendance goals. This position will report to the Director of Group Sales and Experience and work closely with the Group Experience team to produce the best group visit experience.
Your Impact
Responsibilities
Sales and Outreach (50%)

Attend local and national tourism focused conferences and events to grow client base and sell group opportunities

Work with the Director of Group Sales and Experience to meet revenue and attendance targets

Maintain and grow the group sales client database in Salesforce

Manage outreach efforts to bring group audiences of all types to Base Camp, including tour operators, school groups (paid, unpaid, local, national, international), corporate/convention, and others as identified and developed

Manage creation of sales materials for outreach, working with marketing and communications teams on content, design, and audiences

Create and distribute regular reports and progress updates on group sales activities, including progress toward revenue and attendance goals
Fulfillment (35%)

Manage all communication, financial transactions and special requests with group clients – both internal and external requests

Manage all group reservations in the ticketing system and maintain reports on tentative and confirmed group visits.

Manage coordination with the Group Experience team to arrange all logistics for group visits
Strategy and Development (15%)

Complete market research to identify and recommend potential target audiences

Work closely with the local destination management company to current on industry trends and opportunities

Host site visits for potential group clients
What You’ll Bring
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in related field
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
5 years experience in tourism and 3 years of related experience in group sales.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of best practices in group sales strategies and fulfillment.

Experience managing sales outreach efforts.

Experience using CRMs, Salesforce experience a plus

Knowledge of data systems and sales tracking software.

Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of staff and external stakeholders.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Excellent communication, organizational, and research skills.

Meticulous attention to detail and thorough record keeping.

Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office and G-Suite tools.

Salary Information
The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.
The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
The salary range for this position is $80,700 - $85,000.

Job Designation
Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on what’s required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.
