JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/ Objective
East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their community. ESH’s After School Program with our mission by providing high quality programs and services within community centers and school partnerships.
East Side House is looking for a highly motivated, organized, and supportive individual to work in our Youth After-School Program, which focuses on literacy for students in grades 1 through 5 from high-poverty communities in the Bronx, NY. The primary responsibility of the Group Leader is to design and lead enrichment activities for these students. We are seeking creative professionals with experience working with youth in the following areas (but not limited to): academic tutoring and homework help, social-emotional support, science, music, visual arts, media technology, dance, sports and recreation, health awareness, and community leadership.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the After School Program Director, the Group Leader, After School Program - Urban Scholars, will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Create and carry out fun educational, recreational, leadership, community service, and arts activities for elementary school children. Document your successes along the way.
- Adhere to policies and procedures proactively, prioritizing the safety and care of children.
- Write lesson plans weeks in advance. Prepare for lessons the day before or during prep before program starts for the day.
- Build positive relationships with each after-school participant in your care and encourage positive connections among participants. Actively engage with children at all times to support their positive development individually and as a group.
- Conduct yourself professionally and represent the agency positively when interacting with school staff, parents, children, and others in your role.
- Effectively manage your assigned group and maintain enforcement of a progressive discipline policy.
- Record and submit daily attendance and any other required documents to the Director.
- Daily inspect all facilities, equipment, and supplies to ensure everything is accounted for and stored properly at the end of each day.
- Collaborate with team members and provide support to any specialist implementing activities.
- Actively participate in all aspects of staff or member development, including bi-weekly supervision, team meetings, pre-service training, and at least 15 additional hours of training throughout the school year.
- Ensure compliance with ESH, DOE, and DOH regulations and policies.
- Coordinate the daily program schedule, calendar, and staff coverage.
- Strategize, design, and implement outreach efforts to maintain participant enrollment numbers.
- Enter, record, and maintain student attendance data in the reporting system.
- Adhere to, oversee, and document the agency's emergency instructions and plan.
- Must wear a uniform daily to promote unity and recognition of East Side House (shirts and sweaters will be provided).

To perform this position successfully, the Group Leader, After School Program - Urban Scholars must be able to fulfill all the elements of the job description to the highest standard and be able to work well with colleagues in a high energy and collaborative work environment. Additional qualifications include:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience working with elementary-aged children in structured settings
- Ability to manage groups and implement lesson plans
Education / Experience
- Some college coursework in education, youth development, or related field
- Experience in urban after-school or youth development programs
- Skills in arts, STEM, sports, or enrichment specialties
- Bilingual abilities (Spanish strongly preferred in Bronx context, if applicable)

Supervisory Responsibility

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role will also require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Travel
Travel throughout the NYC boroughs is expected for this position (on a need basis)
Expected Work Schedule
The work schedule expected for this is a seasonal part-time position, requiring up to 20-25 hours per week. The After School Program operates on school days from 1:45 PM to 5:45 PM, Monday through Friday, as aligned to the needs of the program/ service. The schedule may be adjusted based on ESH’s operational needs, with notice provided whenever possible.
