Summary

East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. ESH has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.


ESH’s SONYC Program, a literacy-focused program for students in grades 6 through 8 from high-poverty communities in Bronx, NY. ESH managed SONYC Programs offer students additional learning time in a fun, engaging, and safe environment. Students are offered a wide variety of activities including homework help, robotics, team sports, karate, dance, and music. Educational methods are used to build and reinforce the skills needed to reach New York State standards for promotion and graduation.


The Group Leader’s primary responsibility is to design and lead enrichment activities for students. We are seeking creative professionals with experience working with the youth in the following (but not limited to) areas: Music, visual arts, media technology, dance, sports and recreation, health awareness and community leadership.


Primary Functions

Duties and Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:

  • Identify, create, and facilitate age-appropriate, thematic-based lesson plans and activities.
  • Work as a part of a collaborative team, providing support to any specialist implementing activities.
  • Prepare the learning working environment by creating a welcoming space that exhibits participant's work.
  • Build positive relations with youth and adults to serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, and behavior.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants in the program by closely supervising all activities.
  • Assist in participant's enrollment, recording and submitting daily attendance records and other required documents to the program director.
  • Inspect daily all facilities (including shared spaces), equipment, and supplies; be sure all are accounted for and put away at the end of each day.
  • Demonstrate commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
  • Organize storage areas and control the use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse and to minimize the time required for distribution and collection.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation (incident/accident/behavior reports, attendance & sign-in/sign-out sheets).
  • Understand and communicate the East Side House Settlement mission and the goals of the Compass program to the participants and community members.
  • Actively participate in all aspects of professional development, including scheduled supervision, team meetings, pre-service training, and additional paid professional development training required. Demonstrate key competencies including initiative, teamwork, cooperation, preparedness, professionalism, reliability, and a willingness to improve continuously.
  • Organize and participate in external special events to promote the Agency's mission and image, cultivate relationships, and generate broad support.
  • Adhere to all ESH policies, practices, and procedures.

Qualifications

Required Skills/Experience

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Some college preferred.
  • Must have experience working with young children in a structured youth program of middle school, preferably in a racially, ethically, and socio-emotionally diverse urban community.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills through training opportunities and field practice.
  • Possess the ability to engage and lead children in small group activities in your area of specialty; strong communication skills, strong organizational skills, excellent judgment, ability to work in a team in a variety of environments.
  • Candidates possessing skills in foreign languages, visual arts, music, or performing arts are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all participants while always remaining professional.
  • Must be able to motivate the students while setting an example in all areas, including responsibility, timeliness, organization, attendance, and most importantly, professionalism.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Being bilingual is a plus.

Expected Work Schedule

This is a seasonal part-time position. Must be available during after school hours, generally 2:00pm through 6:00pm; 20 hours per week (not inclusive of meetings); hours subject to change based on ESH’s needs.

Supervisory Responsibility

This role has no supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment

This job operates in a professional school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role will also require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
