The Role

Challenger Limited is an ASX-listed investment management firm managing $128.2 billion in assets (as at 31 December 2025). Life with us is fast moving and always exciting. Together we’re driving to deliver our vision to provide our customers with financial security for a better retirement.

We achieve this goal by providing a work environment where people from diverse backgrounds, with a range of skills and experiences can contribute and succeed.

Financial Accountant – Group Financial Control

Sydney CBD | Hybrid (3 days office / 2 days WFH)

  • Join a high‑performing ASX‑listed Group Finance team and accelerate your development.

  • Gain exposure to corporate accounting and securitised mortgage vehicles, including SPVs.

  • Contribute the ASX-Listed Group’s half‑year and full‑year reporting and owning the financial statements for selected entities.

  • Build strong financial control and business partnering capability with clear progression pathways.

About the role

This is a broad financial accounting and control role designed to build strong fundamentals through increasing responsibility across month‑end close, reconciliations, reporting and audit.

You’ll take ownership of defined deliverables, produce audit‑ready support, and develop confidence explaining the drivers of the entities you are responsible for. Working closely with Senior Accountants and the Finance Manager, you’ll build a clear understanding of how entity‑level accounting flows through to Group results and external reporting.

Key responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Control

Build core financial control capability — accuracy, judgement and confidence working with complex balance sheets.

  • Support the accounting for Challenger corporate entities and SPVs, including accruals, prepayments, journals and balance sheet reconciliations.

  • Assist with intercompany processing and investigation of reconciling items.

  • Ensure balances are accurate, complete and well supported.

  • Investigate variances and clearly explain movements.

Group & Entity Reporting

Develop disciplined habits and contribute to continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to month‑end close activities across the Group.

  • Assist with inputs into consolidated Group reporting.

  • Support preparation of statutory financial statements and ASX reporting disclosures.

  • Prepare audit workpapers and respond to auditor queries with guidance from senior team members.

Systems, Process & Ways of Working

  • Work with tools such as Workday, Workiva and Excel to support reporting and reconciliations.

  • Assist with maintaining clean data, schedules and documentation.

  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, controls and accuracy, rather than relying on “how it’s always been done”.

  • Maintain strong habits around accuracy, timeliness and self‑review.

Skills, experience & qualifications needed

You’re a qualified accountant (CA, CPA or equivalent) with experience in financial control, commercial accounting or large‑scale audit. You’re organised, curious and comfortable working through detail, while building confidence explaining your work.

You will bring:

  • A working understanding of IFRS and core accounting principles.

  • Experience preparing journals and balance sheet reconciliations.

  • Exposure to multi‑entity environments and intercompany accounting (or a strong desire to learn).

  • Intermediate Excel skills (e.g. pivot tables, SUMIF/SUMIFS, XLOOKUP).

  • Strong attention to detail and pride in producing accurate, well‑supported work.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

  • A growth mindset - comfortable asking questions, learning from others and building mastery over time.

Desirable

  • Experience in financial services, mortgages or accounting for financial instruments.

  • Exposure to Workday, Workiva or similar finance systems.

Why join our Group Financial Control Team?

Group Financial Control is a collaborative, technically strong team that takes pride in getting the fundamentals right - accuracy, curiosity and consistency.

You’ll enjoy:

  • Genuine breadth across accounting, reporting and governance

  • Strong leadership with clear expectations

  • Mentoring and coaching

  • Hybrid working and a supportive, inclusive culture

  • A solid foundation for a long‑term finance career within an ASX‑listed group

What We Do

Challenger Life is Australia’s largest provider of annuities and provides regular income to thousands of customers. We’re a multi-award-winning Life Company and have $23 billion in assets under management (as at 30 June 2023). Challenger is focused on providing customers with financial security for retirement. We do this by offering investment strategies that exhibit consistently superior performance, and by helping customers in retirement with safe and reliable income streams. As Australia’s largest annuity provider, we provide regular income payments to thousands of Australian retirees. Our lifetime annuities protect retirees from the risk of running out of money late in life. The regular retirement incomes we pay are backed by a high-quality investment portfolio, including fixed income and commercial property investments. These investments generate regular and predictable investment income, which we use to fund retirement incomes paid to our customers.
