Job Description

About the Strategic Consultancy Team

Our UK-based Strategic Consultancy team delivers research, development, technical and management consultancy services that translate knowledge into policy and practice. We undertake qualitative and quantitative research to inform the development of standards, processes, guidance and training, working with major infrastructure organisations and asset owners across the UK and internationally.

  • Road safety, collision and transport data analysis
  • Highway asset management, maintenance and operations consultancy
  • Asset management strategies, lifecycle planning and whole-life costing
  • Digital software solutions and dashboard development
  • Severe weather and winter operations research
  • Road user compliance
  • Human factors
  • Technology and AI applications for infrastructure inspection and maintenance
  • Driving simulator and road trial research
  • Efficiency, lean and value management consultancy
  • Research to inform transportation policy and strategy
  • Development of standards, guidance and training

Key Responsibilities

As part of the Transportation Advisory, Consultancy and Research team, you will contribute to a diverse range of research and consultancy projects. Responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting the delivery of qualitative and quantitative research and analysis.
  • Data analysis and dashboard development.
  • Analysing transport, road safety, asset and other infrastructure-related data to identify trends and inform recommendations.
  • Supporting the development of technical reports, strategies, guidance, standards and client deliverables.
  • Undertaking literature reviews, research and evidence gathering to support project objectives.
  • Contributing to stakeholder engagement, workshops, interviews and consultations.
  • Supporting the development and evaluation of innovative approaches, including technology and AI applications.
  • Assisting with trials, studies and research projects, including driving simulator and road user behaviour research.
  • Supporting highway asset management, maintenance and operational studies, including lifecycle planning and whole-life costing.
  • Presenting findings and recommendations clearly to project teams, clients and stakeholders.
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across AECOM and supporting the delivery of projects to agreed timescales, quality standards and budgets.

Recent projects include road safety analysis and improvement initiatives, development of asset maintenance and inspection requirements, AI-enabled inspection and maintenance solutions, prioritised maintenance programmes, severe weather operational requirements, evaluation of innovation to improve safety on buses, research to improve safety at level crossings and prevent bridge strikes, and driving simulator trials evaluating distraction, roadwork signage and traffic management approaches.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or a scientific discipline with a 2:1 classification (or equivalent) or above
  • A Master’s degree or PhD in a related field would be an advantage
  • Ability to demonstrate a good technical understanding of research and data analysis
  • Willing and able to work towards chartership with the relevant professional institution
  • Good Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Power BI
  • Ability to source, review, collate and analyse information and interpret results
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external clients, both verbally and in writing, with the confidence to engage with a variety of people and discuss technical issues
  • Ability to take ownership of project tasks, with direction from the Project Manager
  • Enthusiastic, hard-working, with ambition, tenacity and drive
  • Ability to structure and prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the wider team
  • Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently, while demonstrating initiative and focus
  • A proactive approach to identifying opportunities for innovation and developing new and improved ways of working
