Project Description: Federated Big Data Queries with Trino
The project aims to design and implement a scalable architecture for executing federated big data queries across heterogeneous data sources using Trino. With the growing volume and fragmentation of enterprise data across relational databases, NoSQL stores, data lakes, and cloud platforms, organizations face challenges in efficiently querying and integrating insights without complex ETL pipelines. Trino’s open source distributed SQL query engine provides a powerful abstraction layer to query diverse backends with high performance and minimal data movement.
Goals
- State-of-the-art analysis of the problem space behind federated queries and corresponding solutions
- Deploy Trino on Verisign internal Kubernetes Infrastructure for evaluation
- Connect Trino to different data sources (NoSQL databases, Kafka, RDBMS, HIVE, Iceberg tables…)
- Evaluate the scalability and performance of some queries and compare Trino execution performance with native queries
- Evaluate the opportunities and limitations of the federated queries, by joining multiple data sources
- Evaluate and assess the security aspects (access controls, auditing, etc.)
- Based on the research and findings, suggest improvements to the existing data infrastructure to support federated queries
Skills
During this project the student will have to work with the following technologies:
- Hands on experience with large scale Distributed Systems
- Big Data technologies and storage format like Kafka, Hive, Iceberg, Druid
- Understanding and benchmarking of Distributed SQL Query Engines
- Gain deep knowledge about Trino, an open source Java application for running Federated SQL Queries
- Deployment on a Kubernetes environment
- Software and Data Engineering
Qualifications
- Current enrollment in Masters degree program
- Availability for ~6 Months
- Experience in one or more of the following technology areas:
- Hands on experience with large scale Distributed Systems
- Big Data technologies and storage format
- Understanding and benchmarking of Distributed SQL query engines
- Software and Data Engineering
- Development on Kubernetes environment
Pre-requisites
- Fluency in both written and spoken English (all documents must be written in English)
- Candidates must have a valid work permit for Switzerland and successfully pass a background check clearance to be eligible to work on this project
