As part of our expansion, we are currently looking for a suitably motivated - Gimbal Control Engineer - to join our group.
What you'll do
- Become a key part of the engineering team and help deliver on Mbryonics’ aspiring goals from optical communications terminals to the underpinning manufacturing processes.
- Design and implement advanced control algorithms for gimbal stabilization, motion control, and target tracking.
- Model electro-mechanical systems and simulate control strategies using tools like MATLAB/Simulink.
- Design and tune control laws for rate and position loops with emphasis on stability margins, disturbance rejection, and jitter minimization.
- Interface with mechanical and electrical engineering teams to integrate motor, bearing, and structural dynamic models.
- Define and validate system-level control requirements (bandwidth, phase/gain margins, jitter, error budgets).
- Tune control loops and validate system behaviour through lab and field testing.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to bring robust systems to production.
- Document control design, modelling assumptions, and verification results per ECSS/NASA standards
Who you are
- B.Eng/M.Eng/PH.D in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Control Systems Engineering or relevant field
- Experience in closed-loop control design for precision motion systems, such as gimbals, optical instruments, or satellite attitude control.
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink
- Strong grasp of control theory, estimation, and system identification.
- Interest in the high tech, aerospace, or space sectors
- Hands-on experience in bringing projects through to completion in a fast-paced environment
- Experience in an R&D environment is beneficial
Desirable Requirements/Technical Skills/Education:
- Working knowledge of dynamic modelling tools (Simcenter 3D, NASTRAN, or similar) and modal reduction techniques.
- Background in space/airborne systems or precision pointing.
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop and software performance validation.
- Experience with disturbance rejection for reaction wheel or micro-vibration environments.
- The ability to work under pressure and to meet required deadlines.
- Problem-solving skills, solution focused and possess the ability to craft the appropriate approaches.
- Interpersonal and team working skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

What We Do
MBRYONICS designs, engineers, and manufactures optical payloads (optical communications and photonics) and optical ground stations for next generation extremely high throughput hybrid Optical/RF satellite systems, optical mesh networks, optical relays, and autonomous optical sensor networks for high precision space domain awareness.
We specialise in both the design and MAIT of optical and photonics systems for industrialised series production. MBRYONICS is pioneering the use of and industrialisation of FreeForm optics and photonic integrated circuits for space systems, including inter-satellite communications, optical feeder links, intra-satellite communications (analogue/digital) and microwave photonics applications.
We have nearly two decades of experience in research and development on some of the most challenging photonics and optics projects, finding cost effective solutions to new technical challenges. We regularly collaborate and consult with teams that need photonics and optics engineering, design and manufacturing AIT expertise, from early stage path finding to industrial production. Collaborating closely to identify the key problems and opportunities while bringing our years of experience to the table from a multidisciplinary team.
