About Oxford Nanopore Technologies
Oxford Nanopore Technologies is headquartered at the Oxford Science Park outside Oxford, UK, with satellite offices and a commercial presence in many global locations across the US, APAC, and Europe. Our goal is to enable the analysis of any living thing, by anyone, anywhere.
We employ individuals from multiple subject areas, including nanopore science, molecular biology and applications, informatics, engineering, electronics, manufacturing, and commercialisation. Our sequencing platform is the only technology that offers real-time analysis, in fully scalable formats from pocket to population scale. This platform can analyze native DNA or RNA and sequence any length of fragment to achieve short to ultra-long read lengths.
We aim to inspire anyone to sequence anything, anywhere. Do you want to be part of that?
Role Summary:
Reporting to the Snr. Director, Genomic Applications, the successful candidate will lead and manage a team responsible for delivering proof-of-concept studies across a range of applied market segments. The team will evaluate the performance of nanopore sequencing in new applications, identify technical or workflow gaps, and provide initial solutions or assessments of how these gaps can be addressed.
This role will involve designing and overseeing experimental studies, analysing results, and generating high-quality data packages and presentations to support internal decision making and customer engagement. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams in Oxford to remain aligned with the latest technology developments and to help assess the suitability of emerging nanopore capabilities for new applications and markets.
Other responsibilities include:
Leading and managing a laboratory-based proof-of-concept team within Genomic Applications
Designing and executing proof-of-concept studies to evaluate nanopore sequencing performance in new applied market applications
Identifying workflow, assay, or technology gaps and proposing potential solutions or development pathways
Supporting the assessment and early-stage development of new sequencing applications using ONT’s nanopore platform
Preparation and QC of sequencing analytes and libraries for experimental studies
Analysing and interpreting experimental data, including basic bioinformatic analysis where appropriate
Generating clear summaries, reports, and presentation materials to communicate findings to internal stakeholders
Collaborating with internal scientific and product development teams to support application evaluation and technology adoption
Managing laboratory activities, supporting team development, and assisting junior scientists with experimental and analytical tasks
Contributing to the continuous improvement of laboratory workflows, experimental design, and proof-of-concept evaluation processes
What We're Looking For...
We'll expect you to have undertaken successful experimental research from initial concept through to execution and interpretation. This should include experience with DNA and/or RNA manipulation and preferably next-generation sequencing technologies. You will have strong knowledge of molecular biology techniques and sequencing workflows, including sample preparation, library preparation, and quality control methods.
Experience in evaluating new technologies, troubleshooting experimental workflows, and identifying practical solutions to technical challenges would be highly advantageous. You should be comfortable working across multiple projects simultaneously and capable of leading and motivating a scientific team in a fast-paced environment.
In addition, you will possess excellent communication and problem-solving skills and be able to clearly present scientific findings to a range of audiences. A PhD in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, microbiology, or a related discipline is required, ideally alongside relevant postdoctoral and/or biotechnology industry experience.
This role will suit a proactive, organised, and scientifically curious individual with a collaborative approach and the ability to lead effectively in a dynamic environment.
Please note that no terminology in this advert is intended to discriminate on the grounds of a person's gender, marital status, race, religion, colour, age, disability or sexual orientation. Every candidate will be assessed only in accordance with their merits, qualifications and abilities to perform the duties of the job.
