As a Genetic Counsellor, your role is to interpret and explain genetic information to customers and to support them and their families to make use of this information. You'll help them to understand the medical facts, including how heredity contributes to their condition, and the options for dealing with the risk of recurrence.
This role delivers pre and post-test genetic counselling appointments to Bupa employees and external customers as part of the My Genomic Healthcare product. Appointments to be delivered using a structured framework to ensure consistency and completeness of information, and ensuring informed consent to proceed is obtained. You will adhere to best practice guidelines, aligning with Bupa clinical governance and all relevant professional codes of conduct.
Appointments are delivered remotely via Bupa systems, so the role can be based anywhere in the UK.
You’ll help us make health happen by:

Take and interpret family and medical histories to calculate the risk of condition occurrence or recurrence.

Interpret genetic tests and explain them in easy-to-understand language to customers and their relatives.

Work with other medical and healthcare staff as part of a multidisciplinary team of genetic consultants, clinical scientists, and other consultants to ensure appropriate follow-up of customers.

Participate in annual Bupa Clinical Reviews and meet the standards required.

Comply with Quality Audits.

Comply with governance policies, including complaint and incident reporting, ensuring details are logged immediately.

Log outcomes measures and other relevant management information as requested.

Ensure you fully understand and comply with all clinical and performance policies, procedures and protocols issued by Bupa.

Demonstrate and role model appropriate behaviours with internal and external customers.
Key Skills / Qualifications needed for this role:

Masters in Genetic Counselling accredited by the Genetic Counselling Registration Board (GCRB) and/or have completed the Scientist Training Programme in genomic counselling and/or be a nurse/midwife who has completed training in counselling skills and human genetics.

Educated to degree level in genetics, biological/biomedical science, or nursing. Other degree areas such as social sciences and psychology may also be relevant.

Complete and maintain professional Registration (Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) or Genetic Counsellor Registration Advisory Board (GCRAB).

Experience in genetic counselling, with excellent communication and counselling skills.

The ability to interpret complex scientific papers and genetic test results.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with senior stakeholders, colleagues, customers, and corporate clients.
