What Impact You'll Make
As an Engineering Intern on the PCS team, you will be an active contributor to the development, testing, and validation of inverters, battery energy storage systems, and controls technologies that power next-generation AI datacenter infrastructure. The rapid growth of AI computing has created an unprecedented demand for reliable, high-density, and highly efficient power conversion systems. You will work directly on the products — including grid-scale inverters, energy storage systems, and advanced control platforms — that are at the center of meeting this demand.
This internship sits at the intersection of power electronics engineering, controls systems, and one of the most dynamic technology sectors in the world. You will gain hands-on experience with real hardware and simulation tools in a professional engineering environment, collaborating with experienced engineers across design, test, and product development teams.

Job Description

What You'll Do (Job Responsibilities)

  • Support the design, simulation, and validation of power conversion systems including grid-scale inverters, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and associated controls platforms intended for AI datacenter power applications
  • Assist with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation testing and component-level testing of inverters, converters, and energy storage subsystems; support setup, execution, and data capture activities
  • Collaborate with design engineers, controls engineers, compliance engineers, and technicians regarding hardware and software design for datacenter power systems
  • Perform electrical component sizing calculations and system-level modeling to support product development and validation activities
  • Review and analyze test and commissioning data to identify performance trends, anomalies, and areas of concern; document findings clearly for team use
  • Assist with the audit and improvement of installation, commissioning, and operation and maintenance (O&M) procedures for inverter and BESS products
  • Assist in developing and refining data collection methods, testing procedures, and documentation standards to support product verification and certification activities
  • Ensure that procedures and test activities align with applicable industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company quality standards
  • Work with controls engineering teams to support tuning, testing, and validation of control algorithms for inverter and energy storage systems
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and innovative work environment; share findings and learnings with the broader team

What You'll Bring (Basic Qualifications)

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university
  • Must be willing to work in the Niskayuna, NY geographical area as specified by the business
  • Must be willing to work in a lab and high-power test environment; adherence to all electrical safety and PPE requirements is mandatory

What Will Make You Stand Out (Desired Qualifications)

  • Strong academic foundation in power electronics, power systems, and electrical and electronic engineering principles
  • Familiarity with inverter and converter topologies, PWM techniques, and grid-connected power conversion concepts
  • Understanding of battery energy storage systems (BESS), battery management systems (BMS), and energy storage control systems (ESCS)
  • Experience working in MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, Python, or similar engineering design and simulation tools
  • Understanding of digital and analog circuit design principles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for technical documentation and reporting
  • Curiosity and genuine interest in the intersection of power electronics and emerging technology sectors such as AI and high-performance computing infrastructure
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a high degree of intellectual curiosity
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and technical staff at all levels
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Previous internship or co-op experience in a related engineering field is a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership, teamwork orientation, and a willingness to learn from both successes and mistakes
