Position Summary
The Gas Instrumentation Specialist 3 is an advanced level position responsible for the operation, maintenance, and optimization of company infrastructure associated with SCADA, measurement, and advanced field technology systems. This role requires a high degree of technical proficiency in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving complex instrumentation issues to ensure operational integrity and regulatory compliance. The specialist plays a critical role in system reliability by responding to service calls, performing precise calibrations, and implementing strategic improvements to enhance performance. While primarily operating autonomously, they may coordinate with support personnel or specialized teams as needed to execute complex repairs and system enhancements. While minor tasks may be completed independently once qualified, most duties require oversight from senior personnel.
Primary Position Responsibilities
- Operated and maintained EFM and AMR meters, ensuring precision through calibration and diagnostic testing.
- Provided technical expertise for system upgrades, equipment design, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Conducted inspections, testing, and commissioning of new gas measurement facilities.
- Maintained system-level testing protocols, deployment strategies, and disaster recovery plans.
- Troubleshot and optimized SCADA equipment, including chartless data recorders and Total Flows.
- Ensured the accuracy of large-capacity meters through rigorous testing, proving, and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Supported pressure monitoring, troubleshooting, and system balancing during peak demand periods.
- Oversaw vendor coordination for maintenance, downtime response, and compliance with organizational standards.
- Communicated with large-volume customers to resolve service-related issues effectively.
- Designed, installed, and sized large commercial meters and regulators.
- Provided training for aspiring Instrument Specialists and participated in specialized measurement training programs.
- Ensured adherence to CoServ’s safety, operational, and security protocols.
- Identified and implemented efficiency improvements within maintenance processes.
- Managed inventory levels of operating supplies and coordinated timely replenishment orders.
- Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures and guidelines including reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
- Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines including reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
Secondary Position Responsibilities
- Accurately completes various forms, including time sheets, service orders, code compliance documents, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.
- Complies with safety requirements by wearing gloves, long sleeves, hard hat, safety glasses, and other protective gear.
- Regularly attends safety meetings and ensures adherence to safety rules and procedures.
- Maintains Operator Qualified status for covered tasks outlined in the CoServ Gas Operator Qualification plan.
- Keeps company-issued tools and equipment in proper working order.
- Participates in emergency callouts and follows the schedule as required.
- Travels for conferences, training sessions, and meetings as needed.
- Completes CPR/First Aid training and maintains certification.
- Conducts general and preventive maintenance on CNG trailers, regulators, and manifolds.
- Oversees equipment at assigned locations, ensuring proper operation and compliance during CNG use.
- Performs reliability-based maintenance and replacement on instruments, including flow meters, pressure gauges, temperature sensors, and calibration devices.
- Manages operating supply inventories by monitoring stock levels and placing orders for replenishment.
- Attends CoServ University training as required.
- Performs other duties and activities as directed.
Position Requirements
Education, Experience, and Certifications Required
- High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalency.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience in the gas distribution industry or possessing equivalent institutional knowledge relevant to the role.
- Completion of all regulatory and company-mandated qualifications for the specific job classification, ensuring readiness to perform covered tasks independently.
- SCADA/OSI experience working with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems, particularly in the natural gas pipeline sector.
- Competent in utilizing ABB Total Flow XRC systems and PCCU software for operational and troubleshooting tasks.
- LPG (Propane) Service & Installation License
- CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) Service & Installation License
- Extensive experience with gas system equipment, including Fisher & Mooney Regulators, valves, YZ odorization systems, electronic and mechanical measurement devices, and odorization technology.
- Expertise in SCADA/HMI operations and OSI Aspentech applications, with a strong background in liquids and gas pipeline systems.
- Advanced ability to interpret P&ID wiring diagrams and technical documentation related to piping and field instrumentation, encompassing temperature and pressure transducers, flow meters, provers, and samplers.
- Comprehensive understanding of 24-volt, 12-volt, and 120-volt electrical systems.
Education, Experience, and Certifications Preferred
- A minimum of ten (10) years' experience in gas distribution or equivalent institutional knowledge required for the role.
- Successfully completes all regulatory and company qualifications relevant to the classification before independently performing the tasks covered.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of metering and regulating equipment fundamentals.
- Possesses hands-on experience with SCADA, and OSI applications in the gas pipeline industry.
- Experienced in working with ABB Total Flow XRC systems and skilled in utilizing PCCU software.
Skills and Abilities Required
- Extensive knowledge of company maps, Procedures Manual, work orders, staking sheets, NFPA and OSHA safety codes, as well as all associated company forms relevant to operations.
- Expertise in the company’s service area, distribution system, system construction practices, and troubleshooting techniques, with comprehensive familiarity in assigned work zones.
- Solid grasp of the company’s tariff policies, rules, regulations, and procedural guidelines.
- Skilled in interpreting technical documents, including blueprints, P&IDs, and schematic drawings, and using them effectively for diagnostics and troubleshooting.
- Proficient in essential computer software applications, including Maximo, UKG, Windows, Outlook, Excel, Word, and Internet Explorer.
- Demonstrated ability to operate independently, handling most assignments autonomously while collaborating on larger-scale tasks as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Physical requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. regularly and up to 100 lbs. occasionally, requiring strength and endurance for heavy lifting tasks.
- Works outdoors 95% of the time, exposed to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and high winds. Must adapt to changing environmental factors while maintaining safety and efficiency.
- Works in potentially hazardous situations involving escaping gas, requiring awareness of gas detection and emergency protocols. Potential exposure to poison oak, poison ivy, and insect stings, necessitating proper protective measures and knowledge of treatment procedures.
- Drives a company vehicle, adhering to safety regulations and proper vehicle maintenance procedures. Frequently works in low-light or no-light conditions, using handheld flashlights or spotlights to ensure visibility and accuracy in tasks.
- Performs call-out responsibilities, responding to urgent situations and ensuring quick resolutions under challenging conditions.
