Graduate Assistant, Non-Teaching Position
About the TRIO McNair Scholars Program: Sponsored by the US Department of Education, the TRIO McNair Program prepares high-achieving first-generation and low-income students for undergraduate research opportunities and graduate school. Each of the twenty-five undergraduate McNair Scholars selected to participate in the program receives instruction and information that is both research- and scholarly-based. In addition to monthly workshops and seminars, faculty mentorship, and ongoing support from the McNair staff, rising juniors and seniors participate in a ten-week, faculty-supervised undergraduate research internship.
Position Summary: The McNair Scholars Program Graduate Assistant (Non-Teaching) would be responsible for assisting the Program’s Assistant Director and TRIO Executive Director with recruiting eligible McNair Scholars, as well as providing Scholars with academic support and assisting them with graduate school information and preparation. This position involves academic support and cooperation.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist in the recruitment of McNair Scholars through e-mail, social media, classroom presentations, and other campaigns
- Assist the Assistant Director in developing, editing, and coordinating recruitment activities
- Develop, edit, and coordinate monthly workshops/seminars related to undergraduate research and graduate school preparation
- Assist, plan, and implement the Summer Undergraduate Internship
- Assist with and edit McNair Alumni information
- Assist with and update McNair Alumni information for the Grant and Annual Performance Report
- Assist and complete additional tasks assigned
Qualifications:
- Earned a Bachelor’s Degree
- Current Enrollment in a Master’s or PhD Program
- Knowledge/Experience with federally funded programs, particularly TRIO, GEAR UP or similar programs
- Understanding the challenges that First-Generation and Low-Income students encounter in higher education
- Time Management/ Communication/Writing/Editing skills
- Academic Coaching and Counseling skills (or a desire to gain experience with these skills)
- Ability to assist McNair Scholars with the graduate school process
- Ability to provide tutoring skills in all academic areas
- Experience with recordkeeping/permanent files
- Extensive research experience in the areas of IACUC/IBC/IRB and CITI Training
- Candidates who are TRIO Alumni or have experience working with first-generation and low-income students, understand FAFSA/Pell-eligible student populations are Strongly Preferred
Compensation: This is an 11-month position and requires 20 hours per week. The TRIO McNair Scholars GANT will earn $15 per hour. We do not provide tuition reimbursement or health insurance.
