ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. 


POSITION OVERVIEW

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center is seeking a dedicated and credentialed School Nurse to lead and manage comprehensive student health services across five school sites. As a key member of the educational team, the School Nurse ensures compliance with all applicable health laws and regulations, supports student access to learning through health services, and supervises a team of medical assistants. This role is critical in promoting a safe, healthy, and inclusive school environment for all students.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Leadership & Supervision

  • Manage, supervise, train, and evaluate medical assistants assigned across all school sites.
  • Develop and maintain standardized health office procedures, protocols, and compliance systems across the organization.
  • Provide training to staff on student health needs, emergency response, mandated reporting, and required health procedures.

Student Health Services & Clinical Care

  • Assess, plan, and provide or delegate appropriate nursing care for students, including those with chronic and acute health conditions (e.g., diabetes, asthma, seizures, severe allergies).
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and emergency care plans.
  • Respond to and coordinate care for student illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies, including crisis situations, epidemics, and pandemics.

Special Education & Student Support Compliance

  • Conduct health assessments and provide nursing input for Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Section 504 Plan processes, including initial, annual, and triennial evaluations.
  • Interpret medical findings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support student access to education.
  • Coordinate with families, healthcare providers, and staff regarding medically necessary services, including home/hospital instruction when applicable.

Health Screening, Assessment & Referral

  • Conduct and oversee mandated health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing) and health assessments.
  • Identify health concerns outside normal limits and initiate appropriate referrals to families and community health resources.
  • Provide follow-up and case management to support student health outcomes.

Communicable Disease Control & Compliance

  • Monitor and enforce immunization requirements and related public health mandates in accordance with California law.
  • Implement communicable disease control measures, including surveillance, exclusion/readmission, and parent/staff notification, in alignment with public health guidance and physician standing orders.
  • Provide education to staff, students, and families regarding communicable diseases and prevention.

Health Records, Documentation & Legal Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, confidential student health records in compliance with state and federal laws (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA as applicable).
  • Ensure proper documentation of health services, screenings, immunizations, and incident/accident reports.
  • Oversee data entry and record maintenance in student information systems (e.g., Aeries).

Family & Staff Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns, required follow-up, and available resources.
  • Serve as a liaison between families, school staff, and healthcare providers.
  • Provide health education and consultation to staff and students to support a safe and inclusive school environment.

School Health & Safety

  • Identify and address health and safety risks across school sites.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and availability of health equipment and supplies.
  • Support implementation of school-wide health policies and procedures.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain current knowledge of school nursing practices, laws, and regulations.
  • Utilize technology and data systems to support health services delivery.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall health and safety of students.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education & Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing and maintained in good standing.
  • Possession of a valid California School Nurse Services Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Certifications

  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid (Healthcare Provider level).
  • AED certification preferred.

Experience

  • Experience supporting students with specialized health needs.
  • Experience in pediatric, school nursing, public health, or a related clinical setting preferred.
  • Prior experience supervising or coordinating support staff preferred.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and California laws related to student health services, immunizations, and student privacy.
  • Understanding of nursing services within Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Section 504 Plan processes.
  • Strong clinical assessment, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage health services across multiple sites.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records and student information systems.

SALARY/BENEFITS

  • $97,760.00 - $122,088.84
  • 210 days of work per year
  • 10 Sick Days per year (accrued on a per payroll basis)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Upon receiving an offer of employment: 

  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ) 
  • Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
  • Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
