Job Summary:Functional Safety Engineer
We are seeking a Software-Focused Functional Safety Engineer to join our team, working on the assessment of software-intensive systems and embedded platforms against published functional safety standards. Successful applicants will be customer-focused and have a strong background in software engineering for safety-critical systems, with knowledge of functional safety concepts, software lifecycle processes, and risk analysis techniques.
Experience in SIL determination, software FMEA/FMEDA, and compliance with standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 26262, or IEC 61511 is highly desirable. Familiarity with embedded systems and real-time software development is essential.
Primary Responsibilities
Assess software and embedded systems for certification against functional safety standards (IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 / ISO 26262 / IEC 62061 / ISO 13849).
Review and analyse software architecture, design, and implementation for compliance with safety requirements.
Provide expert advice to clients on software safety concepts, coding standards (e.g., MISRA), and development best practices.
Specify and, where appropriate, conduct software verification and validation activities, including static analysis, unit testing, and integration testing.
Estimate costs and define requirements for software test environments and tools.
Conduct on-site assessments and audits of software development processes at client premises (including occasional overseas travel).
Prepare detailed technical reports and certification documentation.
Ensure project delivery within budget and in accordance with internal quality procedures.
Represent CSA on relevant technical committees and contribute to industry best practices.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or equivalent).
Strong experience in embedded software development for safety-critical systems.
Proficiency in C, C++, MISRA C, and familiarity with other safety-related languages or frameworks.
Knowledge of software lifecycle models, configuration management, and version control tools.
Prior experience or knowledge in one or more of the following:
Software FMEA / FMEDA
Fault Tree Analysis
SIL determination and safety integrity calculations
MTBF and reliability analysis
HAZOP & LOPA (desirable for systems-level understanding)
Good written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and high computer literacy (Word, Excel, etc.).
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for short periods (up to 1 week occasionally).
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
