New Zealand or Australia | Remote or from our Wellington HQ 🌍

We're looking for a Full Stack Product Engineer to join our team. 🚀

At Optimal, we build powerful research tools that help teams make data-driven decisions. Trusted by some of the world’s biggest brands, we’re passionate about user experience and the transformative power of human insight.

The role

We’re looking for a Full Stack Product Engineer who’s excited to build, ship, and improve product experiences in a fast-moving environment.

You’ll join a small, collaborative team across Product, Engineering, and Design where you won’t just write code - you’ll be actively involved in shaping the direction of our products and understanding our customers so we can create the best possible product experience.

We’re especially interested in engineers who are comfortable moving quickly, iterating based on feedback, and using AI to build better software, faster. This is a role for people who want real ownership in their work, enjoy experimenting, and looking to make an impact.

What you’ll do:

  • Build and ship real product experiences: Design and deliver features that improve how people do user research.
  • Use AI in your workflow: Leverage AI as a core part of your development workflow to build and ship software more efficiently
  • Work closely with Product & Design: Collaborate in a remote-first team to understand user problems and shape solutions
  • Move things forward: Own your work end-to-end, help the team maintain momentum by focusing on outcomes over perfection
  • Contribute to a strong Engineering culture: Share knowledge, learn from others, grow your engineering and product skills

What we're looking for:

  • Entrepreneurial: You like taking ownership, figuring things out with imperfect information, and moving ideas from concept to reality without needing everything defined upfront
  • Product-focused: You don't just build features, you care about why they matter. You think about the bigger picture and work closely with product managers and designers to shape solutions for our customers
  • Experience with our stack (or similar): React, Ruby on Rails, AWS, infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD technologies
  • Customer-focused: You care about building things that genuinely improve the user experience
  • Collaborative and proactive: You communicate and collaborative well in a remote-first environment and enjoy working as part of a team
  • Problem-solver: You can break down problems, work through ambiguity, and deliver practical solutions

What’s in it for you:

  • Competitive salary + Employee Share Option Plan (ESOP) to help you benefit from the long-term success of the company
  • Annual wellbeing allowance and support
  • Generous annual learning and development support
  • Home office set-up
  • An additional day off on your birthday
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Enhanced parental leave for primary and secondary caregivers
  • The chance to have an impact and be part of a high performing team
  • Flexible and remote-first working (our HQ is based in Wellington, NZ, but this role can be based anywhere in New Zealand or Australia)

If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you. We’ll be interviewing as applications come through.
