Trash stinks. Together, we can do better. Mill has created a new system to help you outsmart waste at home.
The Role
Lead the frontend development team for web and mobile applications, driving technical strategy, mentoring engineers, and ensuring high-quality delivery.
Summary Generated by Built In

Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

We’re looking for a Frontend Tech Lead Manager (TLM) to lead the development of our web and mobile applications. This role blends hands-on technical leadership with people management: you’ll guide the architecture and delivery of our frontend systems, while also growing, mentoring, and empowering a team of engineers. You’ll work closely with product, design, and backend teams to shape our product strategy and deliver seamless, scalable user experiences.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of frontend engineers, providing technical guidance, career development, and performance feedback.
  • Drive the frontend strategy and architecture across web and mobile applications.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality, scalable, and performant applications using modern web (and mobile) frameworks
  • Establish engineering best practices: code quality, testing automation, CI/CD, observability, performance monitoring, and accessibility.
  • Partner with product and design teams to define requirements, prioritize roadmaps, and ensure cohesive user experiences across platforms.
  • Contribute hands-on to the codebase where needed, while maintaining a high-level view of system design and technical direction.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and technical excellence.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 8+ years of professional experience in frontend engineering, with a strong focus on building and scaling modern web applications.
  • Deep expertise with big frameworks or framework knowledge in general and TypeScript, plus solid knowledge of at least one other major web framework (Vue, React, Angular, Svelte).
  • Production experience with big frameworks or framework knowledge in general, with a good understanding of mobile release cycles and cross-platform challenges.
  • Proven leadership experience: mentoring engineers, leading technical initiatives, and managing teams or projects.
  • Strong understanding of frontend architecture patterns, API integration, state management, and performance optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems, build tooling, testing frameworks, and code quality enforcement.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to align technical strategy with business and product needs.
  • Previous experience in a hybrid Tech Lead + Manager role, balancing hands-on technical work with people leadership.
  • Proven experience in developing enterprise applications as part of a product team.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with native iOS and/or Android development (nice to have, but not required).
  • Familiarity with release automation, feature flagging, and experimentation platforms.
  • Background working in environments that include backend APIs, serverless applications, or real-time/IoT integrations.
  • Experience with hybrid web applications (shared components, webviews, other technologies)
  • Exposure to compliance or security frameworks (SOC 2, GDPR, ISO 27001, etc.).

The estimated base salary range for this position is $230k to $260k, which does not include the value of benefits or a potential equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs. At Mill, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.

What We Do

We’re on a mission to eliminate waste for good, starting with the food that ends up in landfills.

Did you know that more than half of the food in landfills comes from home kitchens (ReFED)? And food in landfills turns into methane – which is 80x more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period (IPCC).

At Mill, we’re working to turn kitchen scraps into food for chickens. This keeps food in our food system and out of landfills.

Why Work With Us

Food isn't trash. Mill keeps it from stinking up your kitchen – and the planet.
