What’s the role  

The Financial Planning & Appraisal Manager is accountable for enabling high-quality business decisions through robust planning, performance management, appraisal, forecasting and decision ready insight generation. The role acts as a strategic finance partner to business and finance leadership, translating commercial drivers, operational performance, risks and opportunities into clear financial insights and actionable interventions. The role is expected to strengthen decision quality, drive value delivery, maintain financial discipline and accelerate the shift from reporting to providing forward-looking decision ready insights through data, digital and analytics-enabled ways of working.

The ideal candidate is a commercially minded finance leader who combines strong FP&A fundamentals with curiosity, digital fluency and the ability to influence senior stakeholders. They are comfortable operating in ambiguity, translating complex business information into clear recommendations, and leading teams through change. They bring a disciplined focus on value, risk, controls and performance, while continuously partnering with business to enable competitive decision quality, business strategy & performance.

What you will be doing 

  • Lead integrated planning and forecasting: Own and coordinate planning, latest estimate and appraisal processes, ensuring assumptions, financial outcomes and business drivers are transparent, consistent and aligned with business strategy. 

  • Drive performance management: Monitor financial and operational performance against targets/benchmarks, identify emerging risks and opportunities, and support timely interventions to drive competitive performance.

  • Provide business appraisal and decision support: Apply value and risk lenses to investment, portfolio, commercial and operational decisions, ensuring options are evaluated with sound financial logic and business judgement.

  • Generate actionable options and recommendations: Leverage automated analytics dashboards to convert data, trends and scenarios into clear options, decision-ready recommendations and practical interventions that support senior leadership decision-making.

  • Strengthen financial discipline and controls: Ensure planning, reporting and appraisal activities comply with governance, control, assurance and financial reporting requirements.

  • Partner across the business: Build trusted relationships with business leaders, finance colleagues and cross-functional stakeholders to align priorities, challenge constructively and influence better decisions.

  • Enable digital and analytics transformation: Champion automation, self-service reporting, driver-based modelling, scenario planning and predictive analytics to improve speed, quality and efficiency of finance delivery.

  • Develop capability and talent: Coach and develop team members, build future-ready FP&A capabilities and foster a learner mindset across business partnering, data, digital, analytics and process excellence.

  • Transformation & Continuous Improvement: Drive simplification, automation, digitisation and process improvement across planning & appraisal activities, leveraging technology, analytics and AI-enabled tools where appropriate.

  • AI-enabled FP&A governance and decision support: Review, interpret and leverage outputs from AI-enabled tools to deliver high-quality FP&A support, ensuring insights, forecasts and recommendations are grounded in robust assumptions, strong data integrity, sound judgement and disciplined AI risk management and governance.

  • Financial performance management: Strong capability in KPI design, target setting, variance analysis, forecasting, performance appraisal and intervention planning. 

  • Planning and financial decision-making: Ability to coordinate business planning, translate strategy into financial targets and link plans to milestones, actions and measurable outcomes.

  • Financial modelling and scenario analysis: Experience in driver-based modelling, sensitivity & scenario analysis, risk and opportunity framing, business cases and investment appraisal.

  • Data analytics and insights: Ability to validate, analyse and interpret data; identify patterns and trends; and generate insights that answer business questions and improve decision quality.

  • Data management and digital acumen: Understanding of data quality, governance, reporting automation, dashboarding, analytics tools and digital solutions that improve finance processes with ability to work with AI.

  • Storytelling and strategic executive communication: Ability to convert complex analysis into clear, concise and compelling messages for senior stakeholders, including recommendations and decision asks.

  • Process excellence and continuous improvement: Ability to simplify, standardise and improve finance processes while maintaining governance, control and operational discipline.

  • Stakeholder management and influencing: Ability to build trust, challenge constructively, navigate ambiguity and influence outcomes across functions, geographies and leadership levels.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Significant experience in financial planning, appraisal, performance management, business finance or related finance roles.

  • Proven track record of partnering with senior business stakeholders to influence decisions and deliver measurable business outcomes.

  • Strong understanding of financial statements, value drivers, planning cycles, forecasting, business case development and performance reporting.

  • Experience leading teams or influencing cross-functional delivery through matrixed ways of working.

  • Experience with digital finance tools, data visualisation, automation, analytics or driver-based planning solutions is highly desirable.

  • Professional finance qualification, accounting qualification, MBA or relevant business/finance degree preferred.
