Our Company
We’re building the platform for worldbuilders, storytellers, and game devs to create and publish any ‘what if’ they can think of. So far, most of the 6k+ user published games on our site are historical– what if Rome never fell? what if you could go back to 2016 and start over?– but we’re growing into more genres by the day.
Our 50k+ daily active users play different games by writing free text actions and chats with other countries. AI then powers the worlds’ response (make an account to try it yourself, or demo here). We’ve seen nearly 43 million rounds played and are growing quickly.
We’re backed by Y Combinator (W26), Bessemer, Pace Capital, Z Fellows, and more. Join us to help build the future of interactive entertainment.
The Role
We need a full stack web developer (front-end leaning) to work in-person full-time in San Francisco.
Some things you’ll be working on:
Multiplayer
Vastly improved creator tools (like a storyline builder, coworking agent, and more)
Asset (image, video, 3D) additions to platform
Design improvements to the site
Smoother onboarding and account management
Internal tools for our customer support and moderation teams
We’re moving really fast, and want someone on our team who’s prepared for that. To set some expectations up front, you should be prepared for:
Longer hours (50-60/week) in person
Fast pace and strong ability to quickly switch tasks/priorities
Frequently learning new things (must be comfortable tackling truly unknown problems from scratch)
High degree of ownership expected– in return, high degree of trust will be given
Working directly with cofounders
Your Qualifications
What we care most about:
Extremely high slope. Great learners are way more important to us than people who have any particular experience.
Personal drive. We love demos and side projects– please submit any personal projects/demos you may have. Past startup experience is also great.
Passion for product. Most of our players have discovered Pax Historia organically (friends, youtube reviews) and have stuck around because they truly care about the platform we’re building. That’s why we want every one of our employees to care deeply about our product too.
We are not hiring for a minimum # of years of experience. That said, experience with our current tech stack is great but not a must (NextJS, Typescript, Firestore, Supabase, R2.) Experience with mapping software, gaming, or platforms is great. Experience with design (especially UX) is great.

What We Do
Pax Historia is an alternate-history sandbox game where players choose a country, a moment in time, and rewrite the course of history. What if Rome never fell? What if the Soviet Union survived? What if Genghis Khan ruled for another generation? We go beyond history, too. What if aliens invaded Earth? What if you were a college dropout creating a tech startup? The ability to create, edit, and copy custom maps, actors, historical context, and more means that users can play nearly any scenario they can imagine. In the last four months we've organically built a passionate fanbase of tens of thousands of daily active players. Players have created thousands of custom worlds/maps/flags and published them to our thriving community. We process millions of tokens an hour. Still-- we're only getting started. Reach out to start building with us.
