Position: Floating Lead
Reports To: Production Manager
Position Summary: The Floating Lead is a versatile production leader responsible for providing leadership, technical support, and operational oversight across multiple manufacturing departments, including Receiving, Shipping, Welding, Material Preparation, Equipment Assembly, and other production areas as assigned. This position fills leadership gaps, supports departmental workloads, maintains production schedules, ensures quality standards are met, and promotes a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.
The Floating Lead serves as a working leader who actively participates in daily operations while supervising team members, coordinating with department leads, and ensuring production, quality, inventory, and shipping objectives are achieved.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Provide day-to-day leadership and support across multiple production departments based on business needs.
- Assist department leads in meeting production schedules and customer delivery deadlines.
- Supervise employees in accordance with company policies by providing coaching, corrective action, recognition, and development opportunities.
- Assist in onboarding, training, and mentoring employees to ensure quality workmanship and efficient production.
- Participate in employee performance evaluations and maintain documentation regarding employee performance.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, continuous improvement, and a positive work environment.
- Lead by example through professionalism, safety, attendance, and productivity.
Production & Operations
- Coordinate daily priorities with the Production Manager and department leads.
- Support production by actively performing work within assigned departments, including welding, material preparation, equipment assembly, receiving, shipping, inspection, and material handling.
- Monitor workflow to ensure production schedules remain on track and resources are properly allocated.
- Assist with quoting production times and identifying process improvements.
- Maintain departmental organization using 5S principles and good housekeeping practices.
- Maintain departmental shop supplies and submit procurement requests as needed.
Inventory, Materials & Shipping
- Oversee incoming and outgoing material movement to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timely processing.
- Process supplier receipts within the ERP system.
- Verify shipping documentation, bills of lading, packing slips, and customer documentation.
- Ensure Material Test Reports (MTRs), Certificates of Conformance (COCs), and related quality documentation are received, maintained, and properly filed.
- Coordinate with Purchasing, Quality, and Production regarding non-conforming, missing, or misplaced materials.
- Monitor inventory accuracy and assist with cycle counts and inventory control activities.
- Support material handling operations using forklifts, pallet jacks, cranes, and other material handling equipment as authorized.
Technical Responsibilities
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, BOMs, and work instructions.
- Perform or assist with:
- MIG and TIG welding
- Mechanical assembly and disassembly
- Material preparation using power tools, air tools, grinders, tumblers, tapping equipment, and hand tools
- Equipment inspection and troubleshooting
- Shipping preparation and packaging
- Determine appropriate tools, equipment, and production methods required for assigned work.
- Inspect equipment, structures, and materials to identify defects or production issues.
- Assist with rebuilding, cleaning, assembling, and preparing equipment to OEM specifications.
Safety & Continuous Improvement
- Promote and enforce company safety policies and safe work practices.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
- Identify opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, productivity, and customer satisfaction.
- Assist in developing and improving departmental procedures and standardized work instructions.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by Management.

Skills Required
- Supervisory and leadership experience in a production environment
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and BOMs
- MIG and TIG welding skills
- Mechanical assembly and disassembly experience
- Experience using power tools, air tools, grinders, tumblers, tapping equipment, and hand tools
- Experience with equipment inspection and troubleshooting
- Experience processing supplier receipts and using an ERP system
- Familiarity with shipping documentation (bills of lading, packing slips) and maintaining MTRs/COCs
- Authorized operation of material handling equipment (forklift, pallet jack, crane)
- Ability to enforce and maintain 5S and good housekeeping practices
- Experience supporting inventory control activities and cycle counts
- Coaching, onboarding, training, and performance documentation experience
