Job Description Summary:

A service offering of the law firm Fenwick & West LLP, FLEX by Fenwick provides high quality, customized, and cost-effective attorneys to technology and life sciences companies in need of interim in-house counsel to fill temporary needs. Much like its market leading, entrepreneurial client base, Fenwick constantly seeks ways to innovate and remain best in class both for legal work and client service. With this in mind, the firm launched FLEX.
FLEX is seeking a Recruitment and Engagement Manager who will be responsible for sourcing and onboarding FLEX attorneys, responding to client requests, suggesting FLEX attorneys for potential client engagements, and managing client engagements from negotiation through implementation. Reporting to the General Manager of FLEX, the Recruitment and Engagement Manager will recruit new attorneys and develop new client opportunities, as well as maintain and enhance relationships with existing clients and attorneys currently engaged with clients.

Job Description:

Legal Recruiting Responsibilities

  • Manage the hiring process, including creating job descriptions and developing a job posting strategy, evaluating attorney resumes against hiring needs, phone screening and interviewing candidates, assessing the legal skills of candidates through FLEX's testing process, making judgment calls regarding conflicts concerns, and reviewing and suggesting compensation rates for attorney candidates.
  • Effective use of online recruiting tools (e.g., LinkedIn Recruiter).
  • Develop broad and deep knowledge of the FLEX roster of attorneys and suggest appropriate candidates for client engagement opportunities.
  • Build significant professional relationships with attorneys on the FLEX roster.
  • Act as a point person related to HR policy matters for FLEX.
  • Communicate with attorneys to ensure the effective resolution of issues as they arise.

Client Engagement Responsibilities

  • Research prospective clients and respond to inbound requests for FLEX services.
  • Respond to partner and associate requests for client support quickly and clearly.
  • Recommend, select, and submit suitable attorney candidates to meet client’s legal needs.
  • Prepare attorneys for the interviews with the client.
  • Negotiate price and contract terms with the client.
  • Contact clients and attorneys to obtain feedback, handle issues in an efficient manner, and ensure client and attorney satisfaction throughout the engagement lifecycle.
  • Track the expected ends of engagement, contact clients regarding renewing engagements, and help the attorney transition their projects appropriately once an engagement ends.
  • Direct the Finance department on the preparation of monthly and supplemental invoices, track status of payments, and communicate with the client regarding payment collections.
  • Develop hiring profiles to match client needs, and interview and evaluate attorney candidates.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the legal industry and legal practice areas, especially in the context of technology and life sciences companies.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with ability to adjust communication style to adapt appropriately to situations and comprehend complex legal and technical language.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively under pressure with demanding deadlines (a sense of humor helps, too).
  • Strong client service ethic, outstanding interpersonal skills, and ability to learn and understand clients’ business and legal needs efficiently.
  • Excellent presentation skills with ability to effectively submit attorneys to meet client needs.
  • Exceptional organizational skills in keeping track of details, including keeping client, attorney, and engagement information accurate in databases.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).

This is a regular full-time position open to anyone located in the United States. A JD from an accredited law school is required and prior experience as a practicing attorney is highly preferred. The ideal candidate will have recent experience in legal recruiting, preferably with the placement of attorneys in substantive positions, but candidates with other experience in the legal or technology fields are encouraged to apply as well.
