Position SUMMARY

The FLEX Abroad Local Coordinator is responsible for implementing all components of the FLEX Abroad program in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Temporary FLEX Abroad Local Coordinator is supervised by and reports to Regional Director for Central Asia, with program direction from the FLEX Abroad Program Manager and Washington-based program managers. This position necessitates that some work be performed outside of normal business hours, on evenings and weekends.


Position Responsibilities

FLEX Abroad Program Implementation

  • Recruit, select, orient, and support host families, including managing stipends and reimbursements.
  • Recruit and select host schools and coordinate participant enrollment.
  • Manage all participant arrival and departure logistics.
  • Provide any required visa or residency registration support as required.
  • Conduct regular (monthly?) monitoring meetings with host families and participants.
  • Organize arrival, mid‑year, and end‑of‑program orientations, both in and outside of Almaty.
  • Arrange local language instruction and manage the instructional schedule.
  • Support participant engagement in leadership activities and skills‑building activities.
  • Plan and conduct cultural excursions and enrichment activities for students and host families.
  • Provide comprehensive on‑program support, including logistical and administrative assistance; facilitation of medical/dental care; social-emotional support; monitoring academic progress, language acquisition, and general adjustment; and resolving host family, school, and other program issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Administrative & Financial Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and tracking annual budgets for FLEX Abroad in Kazakhstan.
  • Prepare financial analysis, expenditure documentation, and reports as requested.
  • Maintain accurate program records, files, photo archives, and monitoring data.
  • Provide administrative and financial support for related American Councils programs as assigned.
  • Complete monthly monitoring reports for the Washington, DC office.
  • Perform additional administrative and financial duties as required.

Organizational & Cross‑Program Support

  • Provide support to the FLEX Program in Kazakhstan at the request of the Regional Director
  • Perform additional organizational and cross-program support duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Permission to live and work in Kazakhstan
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in a relevant field of study
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in exchange program administration, youth program, or position with similar duties
  • Outstanding time management, organization, networking, and planning skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and multicultural interpersonal skills
  • Fluent in English and one or more local languages
  • Familiarity with the education system in Kazakhstan 
  • Experience traveling under difficult conditions
  • Flexibility to occasional work on weekends and evenings
  • Experience in budget management
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software suite and common social media platforms
