The Role

Description:  Responsible for leading and managing fleet operations, safety programs, and risk compliance across an entire division. This role ensures the company adheres to all regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and internal policies, while driving initiatives to reduce risks, enhance fleet efficiency, and foster a culture of safety excellence. The Director works closely with executive leadership, branch managers, and field teams to establish strategic objectives and execute programs that improve overall safety and compliance performance.

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Transportation, Risk Management, Business Administration, or a related field required (equivalent experience may be considered).
  • Professional safety certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), ARM (Associate in Risk Management) preferred or ability to obtain and maintain.

Experience: 

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in fleet management, safety leadership, and risk compliance roles, preferably in a multi-location service industry.
  • At least 5 years of experience in fleet management, equipment maintenance, or operations management (required)
  • At least 3 years of experience in a leadership or director-level role (required)
  • Proven experience with fleet management software, maintenance scheduling, and vendor management (required)
  • Experience managing large vehicle fleets and implementing preventive maintenance programs.

  • Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate and develop staff
  • In-depth knowledge of fleet operations, vehicle maintenance, and repair processes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience using data to identify trends and develop strategic initiatives
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on operational efficiency
  • Expertise in managing budgets, controlling costs, and optimizing fleet performance
  • Proficiency in fleet management software, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and data analysis tools
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance (DOT, EPA, OSHA, etc.) and safety standards in fleet management
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans to optimize fleet operations
  • Strong negotiation and vendor management skills
  • Ability to travel regularly throughout the division

General Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the fleet, including vehicle procurement, maintenance, and disposal
  • Develop and implement fleet management strategies to ensure maximum efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness
  • Lead and manage the fleet and maintenance teams, ensuring proper staffing, training, and development
  • Ensure all vehicles and equipment are properly maintained, serviced, and comply with safety regulations
  • Develop and manage fleet maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and optimize fleet utilization
  • Monitor fleet performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions as necessary
  • Establish and manage fleet-related budgets, controlling costs related to vehicle procurement, maintenance, fuel, and repairs
  • Implement fleet tracking systems and technology to monitor vehicle usage, location, and performance
  • Negotiate contracts with vendors and suppliers for vehicle maintenance, parts, and services
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations regarding vehicle operation, maintenance, and safety
  • Analyze fleet performance data to identify trends, improve efficiency, and reduce costs
  • Report regularly to senior management on fleet performance, costs, and other key metrics
  • Develop and execute strategies to reduce the environmental impact of the fleet, including adopting sustainable and energy-efficient technologies
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes related to fleet management
