Key Responsibilities
Carry out planned and corrective maintenance, repair and overhaul of deck machinery and equipment, including cranes, davits, winches, windlasses, mooring equipment and associated systems.
Diagnose and assist in resolving mechanical, hydraulic and basic electrical faults affecting deck machinery and equipment.
Perform mechanical fitting, dismantling, inspection, repair, reassembly and testing of equipment and components as required.
Carry out welding, cutting and fabrication work to support the maintenance, repair and modification of deck equipment and structures.
Inspect deck machinery and equipment to identify wear, damage, defects or developing faults, reporting findings and taking appropriate corrective action under the direction of the responsible Technical Officer.
Support the maintenance and testing of lifeboat and tender davits, launching appliances and associated mechanical equipment.
Complete assigned deck machinery defects and work orders safely, efficiently and to the required technical standard.
Work closely with the Deck Department and other Technical personnel during maintenance, repairs, equipment testing and operational activities.
Safely use and maintain workshop machinery, welding equipment, power tools, hand tools and measuring equipment appropriate to the role.
Follow all shipboard safety procedures, permit-to-work requirements, risk controls and safe working practices, including the correct use of personal protective equipment.
Maintain assigned workshops and work areas in a safe, clean and organized condition, ensuring tools and equipment are correctly maintained and stored.
Support the responsible Technical Officer and Technical Stores team in maintaining adequate stocks of spare parts, welding materials, consumables and maintenance supplies.
Accurately record completed maintenance, equipment history and spare parts consumption within the vessel’s planned maintenance system (AMOS).
Assist with urgent repairs and equipment breakdowns as required to support the safe and reliable operation of the vessel.
Participate fully in assigned emergency duties, safety drills and shipboard training
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Minimum 12 months’ professional experience in a mechanical fitter, maintenance technician, marine fitter or similar technical trade role.
Strong practical knowledge of mechanical maintenance, repair, overhaul and fault-finding on machinery and equipment.
Experience maintaining and repairing mechanical and hydraulic equipment, including pumps, motors, gearboxes, bearings, brakes, couplings, valves and associated components.
Practical experience with deck machinery or lifting equipment, such as cranes, davits, winches, windlasses or similar equipment, is highly desirable.
Competent in mechanical fitting, including dismantling, inspection, measurement, component replacement, alignment, reassembly and testing.
Practical welding and fabrication skills, with the ability to carry out routine welding, cutting, grinding, fitting and fabrication work safely and to an appropriate standard.
Basic practical knowledge of electrical systems and components, with the ability to identify and support fault-finding on equipment within the limitations of the role.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, equipment manuals, mechanical diagrams and basic electrical or hydraulic schematics.
Competent in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, workshop machinery, welding equipment and precision measuring instruments.
Good fault-finding and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify equipment defects, abnormal operation and developing mechanical issues.
Understanding of planned and corrective maintenance practices, including accurate recording of completed work, equipment condition and parts used.
Strong awareness of technical safety, permit-to-work requirements, isolation procedures, risk controls and personal protective equipment.
Ability to work safely and effectively at height, on open decks and around machinery and lifting equipment, as required by the position.
Ability to work independently within assigned responsibilities while following the direction of the responsible Technical Officer.
Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both Technical and Deck Department personnel in a multicultural shipboard environment.
