Job Description: The Peer Specialist's role is to support others in recovery from a substance use disorder. The Peer Specialist will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and be a motivator to recovering individuals in order to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Will share personal, practical experience and firsthand knowledge and insight for the benefit of the client and the treatment team.
  • Serve as a mentor to clients to promote hope and empowerment in treatment.
  • Participate in team meetings and treatment plan review meetings.
  • Provide support, encouragement, and assistance with managing daily life activities.
  • Act as an advocate for client treatment, participation in community programming, understanding rights, mediation, and conflict resolution, etc.
  • Attend weekly court sessions, do assessments of potential clients, and drug screening from the court.
  • Hold weekly groups at the jail.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of paid volunteer or work experience with adults with substance use disorders
  • Been in Recovery for 1 year.

Physical Requirements

  • Capable of visiting consumers in their homes or the community, which may not be handicapped accessible.
  • Must have knowledge and ability to manage their own mental illness and must be well established in their individual recovery.

Special Requirements 

  • Must successfully pass background checks and drug screen.
  • Valid driver’s license in the state of KY and dependable transportation

Skills Required
