Work for the IMF. Work for the World.

The Monetary and Capital Markets Department (MCM) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is seeking a highly motivated Financial Sector Expert/Senior Financial Sector Expert to join the Financial Sector Assessments and Policies (FS) Division. The position will be based at the IMF's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The FS Division has four core responsibilities: (1) managing and reviewing the Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP), including its financial stability risk assessments; (2) developing FSAP policies and instruments, including efforts to integrate FSAP findings with other financial surveillance activities; (3) developing, applying, and evaluating analytical tools for financial stability assessment, including stress testing of banks and nonbank financial institutions, climate-related financial risk analysis, household and corporate sector vulnerability analysis using microdata, interconnectedness and system-wide stress testing, spillover analysis, and related methodologies; and (4) disseminating these analytical tools to internal and external audiences through technical assistance, technical cooperation, and training.

The successful candidate will contribute to the division’s work on assessing systemic financial risks, particularly by advancing analysis of the interactions between insurers and banks. A particular focus of this role will be leading the work for strengthening the Fund’s analytical work on the financial stability implications of insurance protection gaps and natural disasters, including how they may amplify vulnerabilities, affect financial resilience, and create new channels of risk transmission across the financial system.

The selected candidate will participate in FSAP missions and other surveillance activities, lead technical assistance and capacity development to member countries and the design and delivery of training programs, and undertake policy-oriented research. The position offers a unique opportunity to help shape the Fund’s analytical work at the intersection of financial stability, insurance, and macro-financial risk analysis. All aspects of the work involve close collaboration with internal teams, external researchers and specialists, and regular interaction with senior IMF staff and country authorities.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate should possess an advanced university degree (Ph.D. preferred) in economics, finance, or a related field and at least four years of relevant professional work experience.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in financial stability assessment, especially related to insurance protection gaps and risks from natural disasters, with a track record of developing innovative analytical approaches to assessing evolving sources of financial sector vulnerability. Experience with coding and the use of econometric, statistical, or quantitative simulation tools is highly desirable.

A regular staff member who is selected to fill the vacancy will maintain their open-ended status. If the selected candidate is a contractual employee,  they will be offered a Term staff appointment. Staff members already on a term appointment will continue their current term but may receive an extension provided that their current term appointment has not already been extended.

All applicants are expected to include a Statement of Interest as an attachment to the application, which may be used in the screening process for this vacancy.

What We Do

The International Monetary Fund has a key position in promoting the health of the world economy. Established in 1944 as a part of the United Nations system, the IMF's primary purpose is to ensure the stability of the international monetary system—the system of exchange rates and international payments that enables countries and their citizens to buy goods and services from each other. This is essential for sustainable economic growth and rising living standards. To maintain stability and prevent crises in the international monetary system, the IMF conducts surveillance of national, regional, and global economic and financial developments. It provides advice to its 190 member countries, encouraging them to adopt policies that foster economic stability, reduce their vulnerability to economic and financial crises, and raise living standards. The IMF also serves as a forum where its global membership can discuss the national, regional, and global consequences of their policies. The IMF makes financing temporarily available to member countries to help them address balance of payments problems—that is, when they find themselves short of foreign exchange to meet their payments to other countries. Finally, the IMF provides countries with training to help them build the expertise and institutions they need for economic stability and growth. Supporting all of these activities is the institution's work in economic research and statistics
