What can I expect from the programme?

Our Graduate programme will give you an experience like no other working within our dynamic Financial Markets team. Our Financial Markets team help our customers with execution and risk management across a variety of foreign exchange, interest rate and commodity products. They have extensive experience and knowledge in both local and offshore markets, and are able to help advise everyone from consumer and small business customers through to large corporates and major institutional investors. They are a truly global team spread across New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Europe, and America. We are offering a permanent graduate position on a tailored programme which has been designed with future leaders in mind.

Our current programme is based in Auckland and will run for approximately 12 months.  You’ll start with us as a permanent employee in February 2027 on an immersive orientation which will help grow your understanding of Westpac NZ along with the wider grad cohort. At the end of your programme, you’ll be supported to find a suitable role that matches your capabilities and interests within your business area.

We’ll provide loads of learning and support to help you make the most of the experience. You’ll receive lots of opportunities for learning and growth that will optimise your role performance and career progression. Financial Markets champions, leaders and mentors will support you during the programme experience. The programme is structured to help you identify your focus areas and tailored training sessions will build and strengthen your technical and soft skills - accelerating your personal and professional career development.  Expect to be able to give back, you can join numerous communities, volunteering and sustainability initiatives rounding out your whole work life experience.

To help you to learn about different parts of your business area you’ll complete a number of rotations across the various business units that make up Financial Markets. This could include Foreign Exchange and Interest Rate Sales, Trading, Economics, Strategy and Debt Capital Markets.

The day to day: 

  • Expect to contribute from day one and have an impact on the business.

  • Understanding global markets, economic pressures and how these relate to foreign exchange and interest rates, while relaying this information to help customers manage their transactions

  • Engaging, educating and supporting business partners across the Westpac network to ensure they understand how to access our expertise and the products that are available to assist their customers

  • Pricing and execution across a range of financial markets products and reporting

  • Management of digital financial markets solutions

We welcome graduates from Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance or STEM related disciplines, but we are also  open to other backgrounds with an interest/passion for financial markets.

You will gain exposure to a project, based on a real business problem which you will propose and/or implement a solution and present to key stakeholders.

To be eligible, you must be in your final year of study or have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree within the past 12 months. Our Graduate opportunities are entry level roles giving those on the programme broad exposure across the relevant business unit. Additionally, applicants must be New Zealand or Australian citizens or permanent residents.
