About the FCA and team 

We regulate financial services firms in the UK, to keep financial markets fair, thriving and effective. By joining us, you’ll play a key part in protecting consumers, driving economic growth, and shaping the future of UK finance services.  

SPC oversees firms and individuals (supervision), creates and reviews the rules by which they operate (policy) and identifies and remedies ineffective competition in markets (competition).

The FCA is dedicating resources to better understand market functioning in real time and how market-wide risks are building up over time. We are looking for candidates with a solid analytical and practical understanding of financial markets and financial market risk management experience. To align with our objectives, a significant knowledge of fixed income, equity, rates, derivatives or commodities markets, an ability to analyse different sectors or firm behaviours, trading strategies and risk building through the use of data is essential.

Role responsibilities

  • Leading the design and implementation of a data led monitoring approach to market wide risks of concentrations, leverage and interconnectedness across UK markets 

  • Leading, designing and communicating on the analytical assessment of the market wide risks- through the use and deployment of risk sensitive data and pertinent visualisations  

  • Leading recommendations to reduce such risks through firm outreach, or publications or more tailored analysis. 

  • Designing and leading the real time assessment of the health of market functioning in both normal and stress times. Leading responses to market events, including engaging with firms to gather information, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to mitigate impacts on consumer and markets 

  •  Leading the communication, both internal and external, on the market wide monitoring and risks assessment  

  • Working as part of a team to undertake proactive thematic projects relating to risks present across the market 

Skills required 

Minimum:

  • Significant expertise and experience of fixed income, equity, rates, derivatives or commodities markets

  • Significant experience of strong analytical outputs, of using data and analysis to reach conclusions on overall risks related to trading strategies or to market functions

  • Significant demonstratable experience of leading projects independently and delivering high quality outputs on time

Essential:

  • Ability to work at pace and under pressure, using sound judgement and escalating issues appropriately  

  • Confident in taking responsibility with the ability to balance and manage competing priorities, working independently and in a team and manage several work streams simultaneously. Experience of Strong prioritisation and   project management skills 

  • Proven ability to impact and influence senior internal and external stakeholders

  • Clear and authoritative communication skills to present to a senior audience/effective ability to articulate and synthetise market developments

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with senior management, other regulators and staff at all levels within the FCA

  • Effectively prioritise workloads and manages competing demands to deliver key tasks effectively and to a high standard
