About Take Command Health
Take Command Health is a start-up on a mission to improve the healthcare system, starting with health insurance. Pragmatically speaking, we help employers reimburse employees for individual insurance instead of offering a traditional one-size-fits-all group plan. We believe this model can empower employees (when they have the right support) to be savvy healthcare consumers and have a transformative impact on the entire healthcare system.

Let’s be honest—health insurance is usually a confusing, frustrating, and even emotional experience for people. We want to fix that with a new model, great technology, and a superior user experience. We have made a great start, but we need your help to fully realize our long-term vision.

About the VP of Finance Role

We’re looking for a key member of our senior leadership team to bring a finance perspective to our strategic decision making and day-to-day operations. You’ll need to be prepared to put on your strategy hat for things like board meetings, budget discussions, hiring plans, and go-to-market brainstorms while being willing to roll up your sleeves and jump in on detailed stuff like data tracking, accounting, and financial statements. The right person for this role will love strategy brainstorms in the morning and then turning around in the afternoon to implement and build—teams, processes, financial models, etc.

You’ll be the senior finance voice on our fast-growing team and report directly to the CEO. Although you’ll likely start as a team of one, the goal is to grow a team behind you to support our team’s operational planning, accounting, data analysis, or other needs. As our team and your responsibilities grow, our goal is for you to grow with us into a CFO role at a successful venture-backed startup.

A few things you can expect to jump in on right away:

  • Lead our team through strategic planning exercises
  • Help us with go-to-market and pricing strategies
  • Organize and automate our client data to surface strategic insights
  • Lead projects to enhance relationships with key external partners and vendors
  • Collaborate with teams to produce annual budgets and forecasts
  • Set up systems to track our spending and account receivables
  • Work with other team leaders to create team KPI dashboards
  • Prepare financial statements and board decks
  • Design more robust and automated accounting and budget procedures

While we care more about bringing the right person onto our team over skills, we anticipate top candidates would meet the following criteria:

  • 10+ years of relevant work experience (start-up experience a plus)
  • Background in strategy consulting or investment banking a plus
  • Accounting or healthcare experience a plus
  • Experience building a team and mentoring junior employees
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in finance or accounting or an MBA with related work experience

We’re looking for a great teammate
Great products are built by great teams and great teams are made up of great people. We’re eager to partner with someone that can use their knowledge, skills, and experience to make all of us—and our product—better.

  • Passion for what you do: We know…how exciting can health insurance really be? The reality is our clients love us because we make something that is frustrating, easy and straightforward and, um…kind of fun! We get excited about that! That’s how we made it this far and we enjoy the company of people who care about the problems we’re solving.
  • Sense of ownership: Our mission is big and our vision audacious. We succeed as a team by supporting each other and acting with a sense of ownership on big things and small things. We love incremental improvements and look for teammates that can make our product and our team a little bit better every day.
  • Attention to detail…: The importance of this for our data-driven product is hard to overstate, and we take pride in improvements large and small. We’re also talking about people’s health, money, and well-being, so we want to be right.
  • …with an eye on the big picture: We want to hear your voice in our strategy meetings, client engagements, and internal meetings to help us shape the direction of our culture and team.
  • Leadership: People are going to have to follow your lead, and the way you communicate and carry yourself is not something we gloss over. You’ll have a senior leadership title but we expect people to follow you based on who you are and how you act, not just because of your title.
  • Appreciation of testing, rapid prototypes, and pivots: Software is complicated and we’re tackling complex problems for our users. Also, you’ve probably noticed from the news that the health insurance industry we’re innovating in is pretty fluid right now. We don’t expect everything you do to work perfectly or last forever. Be prepared to iterate on the fly.

Perks
At Take Command Health, we’re excited to build a team and culture that reflects our values. While we work hard to solve difficult problems, we believe strongly in a healthy work-life balance. We offer plenty of employee benefits as we continue our mission to support our employees overall.

  • A generously funded ICHRA that can be used for premiums (medical, dental, vision – whatever you need) and medical expenses. You get to use our own product and we think that’s so exciting and rare!
  • We offer unlimited personal vacation with only very minor restrictions (we need you to coordinate with your department and to be available during Open Enrollment)
  • We’re working on setting up retirement benefits like a 401(k). In fact, you will probably help out with this your first few weeks on the job.
  • “HRA off the grid”: we provide a small stipend to employees each year to have an adventure and work remotely for a week. The only rules are you have to go somewhere you’ve never been and do something you’ve never done (while still making a few Zoom meetings).
  • As you get better, we get better. We provide a stipend for professional development courses and access to executive coaching.
  • You’ll get your own company card with a small budget to pay for treats when you meet with team members, etc. Plus, our CEO will always invite you to lunch (and will often pay!).
  • Adding a member to your family is a huge deal, we offer paid parental leave for new parents.
  • We have a beautiful office conveniently located near The Hill (Walnut Hill & 75). The kitchen is stocked (with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks). Plus, we’ve designed the space to have lots of different areas so you can work lounged on the couch or standing near your colleagues or holed up in a phone room. Of course, you’ll also get your own desk, too.
  • We offer a technology stipend so you can purchase your own equipment and then keep it after you leave (so long as you’ve worked with us for at least 3 months). You’ll get some more added each year to make sure your equipment is up-to-date. Use it on any technology you need to do your job – laptop, headphones, monitor, new phone. The only thing you can’t use it on is recurring fees (like your cellphone bill).
  • Struggling with childcare for the day? Our office is kid-friendly and we even have a closet full of toys so you don’t have to make tough choices about how to manage your day. Just need to hole up in your comfy clothes and churn through some projects? We have always been flexible on where you work – we hope to see you around the office a few times a week but we also aren’t keeping tabs on when you work from the office and when you work from home.
  • There’s plenty of other fun perks, too. From swag to happy hours and even the fun bonus from time-to-time we work hard to offer a great environment where you want to work!

We also want to share our company with you. We believe when everyone has skin in the game, it makes work more meaningful. We have equity options available to share with this position.

More about us
We recently secured our Series A funding and are thrilled to be able to expand our team. The health insurance industry needs some disruption and despite being a small startup, we’re the recognized industry leaders for the reimbursement model.

We’ve been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Dallas Morning News, and other publications around Texas and are excited about our growth opportunities.

Get in Touch
This has mostly been about us, but we’d love to hear from you. We’d love to hear your story. Thanks, we can’t wait to hear from you!
