Finance at Valon 

The Finance team sits across all business lines and product areas at Valon (technology development, servicing, originations, and insurance) and manages the company’s day-to-day financial operations. This includes accounting, reporting, cash management, planning, and strategic insights. Other ad hoc / seasonal responsibilities include audits, improving financial controls, and vendor management. As a member of the finance team, you will work with senior-level leaders across the company in understanding and optimizing their business units.

About the Role 

We are looking for an experienced accountant to join our rapidly growing fintech company. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of accounting principles and practices, with experience in managing financial records, preparing financial statements, and analyzing financial data. Also, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information, maintaining financial controls, and developing financial reports. You will report directly to the Assistant Controller.

Responsibilities

  • Fully engage with Valon’s lending team to oversee day-to-day reporting and closing processes, including:
    • Manage mortgage loan accounting, including reviewing loan transactions, recording loan payments, and preparing loan-related financial reports
    • Retain books and records for financial products (PnL, funding/sales, valuation adjustments, and derivatives)
    • Implement loans held for investment reviews and estimation of credit losses (CECL)
  • Conduct mortgage servicing right (MSR) analysis and oversight of servicing portfolio
  • Launch new initiatives, including mandatory loan commitments, rate hedging, and accounting processes for financial products
  • Perform bank reconciliations and manage cash flow, including managing warehouse financing facilities with external banks
  • Enhance Valon’s ERP implementation (Loan Vision) as the lending business scales
  • Monitor and maintain financial controls and policies
  • Coordinate with external auditors and tax accountants to prepare financial statements and tax returns 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business operations and strategic initiatives for the business
  • Assist with budget preparation and forecasting
  • Review and analyze financial statements to identify discrepancies and ensure compliance with accounting principles and regulations

Ideal Background 

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
  • Experience managing loan accounting preferred (mortgages and related financial products)
  • Experience working in a startup or financial technology company is a plus
  • Working knowledge of SQL and/or willingness to learn

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • 2-5 years of experience in accounting or finance
  • Work experience at a public accounting firm and/or a financial services firm, such as an asset manager, hedge fund, or private equity firm
  • Willingness to learn and take ownership of projects
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Experience working in a startup or technology company is a plus

This Base Compensation pay range applies to our New York City located staff and may differ according to location.
