The Role

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Job Description

The New York Times is seeking a reporter to cover Wall Street for our finance team.

You will break news, report medium term features, and produce accountability journalism. A focus of the beat will be takeovers, initial public offerings, and other deals but this reporter will also lean on sourcing inside Wall Street’s biggest banks and law firms to cover major storylines in the financial world. That may include the role investors and bankers are playing in setting policy in Washington D.C., and the impact of that policy on the financial community.

You will have a passion for financial news and be comfortable handling stories in multiple formats, from breaking news for a blog to longer-form features. A collaborative, enthusiastic spirit is essential, as is the desire to bring scrutiny to a powerful industry.

This position is based in New York and requires regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • You will cover breaking news and produce longer-form features.

  • You will collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom.

  • You will deliver clear and engaging reporting, adhering to The New York Times style guidelines and standards.

  • You will demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Finance editor in New York.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience reporting on finance, Wall Street, insurance, or other related industries.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop sources and break news.

  • Experience working in high-pressure, deadline-driven newsrooms.

  • Strong reporting and writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong understanding of Times style and standards

  • A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,049.64 and $125,000.00.
