Who We Are

Research and Innovation (RI), led by the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI), enables, and advances the University’s research priorities as well as research activities of Cornell facilities, laboratories, institutes, and research centers (FLICS).

The Center for Technology Licensing (CTL) is Cornell University’s technology transfer office. CTL’s mission is to bring the University’s scientific discoveries, technological innovations, and medical advances to the marketplace for societal benefit and to foster new venture creation and growth to support economic development within New York State and across the nation.

The office manages a broad array of technologies for Cornell’s various campuses, including the Ithaca campus, Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM), Cornell Tech in New York City, and Cornell AgriTech in Geneva.

To bridge the gap between lab and market, business ideas, and successful startups, CTL manages the university gap funding series and works closely with the university’s incubators and accelerators to advance commercialization, new ventures, and partnerships.

The role of the Financial Support and Accounting Team Leader at the Center for Technology Licensing (CTL) encompasses a blend of direct financial oversight and team leadership responsibilities. Key functions include conducting the royalty distribution process and developing comprehensive accounting procedures tailored for various intellectual property activities. This position is instrumental in resolving complex financial problems and ensuring the adherence to internal controls, thereby maintaining the integrity and accuracy of financial operations within the Center.

The position supervises and manages the Accounts Payable (A/P) staff, ensuring efficient operation and coordination of the accounting support activities with other CTL staff. Additionally, it involves the preparation and creation of performance reports on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, alongside responding to ad-hoc reporting needs as required. The role demands a strategic and analytical mindset to improve processes and maintain high financial standards across all accounting functions within the Center.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least 3 years’ work experience in a financial setting, some in a team leader or supervisory role. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-pace, multi-tasking work environment. Requires attention to detail and strong verbal and written communication skills; must be comfortable communicating and working with customers and clients and across functional groups.
  • Requires sound, equitable judgment, is a critical thinker and problem solver and can build consensus among a diverse work group. Receptive to constructive feedback.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to prioritize and manage workload and deadlines.
  • Experience with relational databases.
  • Well-versed in use of PCs and software for creating spreadsheets, conducting financial analysis, preparing reports and presenting information to management.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

What We Prefer

Additionally, we would like to see evidence of:

  • Experience in intellectual property management and generating reports in SQL a plus.

  • This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The position will allow for the flexibility to work remotely 1-2 days per week. The New York Convenience of Employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position.
