The opportunity

The FEOL R&D Process Manager will lead a team focused on front-end-of-line (FEOL) process R&D for groundbreaking eyepiece technology at Magic Leap’s Austin facility. This role is integral to advancing our nanofabrication processes and working closely with cross-functional teams to transition innovative designs from research to production. You'll be at the forefront of AR hardware development, tackling complex fabrication challenges and driving high-impact projects that bring new technology to life.

This role requires someone to be onsite in Austin, TX. Relocation assistance may be available

What you’ll do

  • Lead a team of 8–15 R&D professionals, setting clear goals and providing feedback to support their professional growth.
  • Establish project priorities and manage resources, ensuring efficient workflow across photolithography, plasma etch, and thin film deposition units.
  • Apply expertise in nanofabrication, including imprint and lithographic processes, wafer cleaning, plasma etch, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and metals deposition.
  • Coordinate with the process integration team and use sound judgment to manage competing priorities around project schedules and tool health.
  • Collaborate with teams across nanofabrication, materials R&D, optical design, and factory engineering to transition R&D processes into a scalable production environment.
  • Provide guidance on equipment selection, budgeting, and qualification to ensure process compatibility with factory requirements.
  • Lead qualification of new materials, substrates, and films in a pilot production setting.
  • Ensure timely project completion by coordinating with facilities, logistics, and supply chain support teams.

The experience you bring

  • Proven experience in nanofabrication, ideally within semiconductor or AR hardware development.
  • Strong technical expertise in imprint and conventional lithographic processes, plasma etching, wafer cleaning, CVD, metals deposition, and thin film metrology.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods (MSA/GRR) and process improvement techniques.
  • Familiarity with JMP or similar data visualization tools for organizing and analyzing complex data sets.
  • Ability to build and sustain effective working relationships across multiple engineering disciplines.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience in characterizing materials and developing test protocols for sub-assembly components.
  • A strong statistical background and experience in custom scripting for data post-processing (e.g., Python, Matlab)
