OEM Remanufacturing is Finning’s flagship reman facility rebuilding some of the largest Caterpillar mining equipment in the world. Our Technical Services department is looking for someone like you to join our dynamic failure analysis team.
In this role you will learn the process of failure analysis on Caterpillar components in order to determine the root cause of component failure. By analyzing and determining the root cause of failures through documenting components on the shop floor, researching component history, and generating technical failure analysis reports, significant changes can be made to internal process, component design, and use. You will leverage your background knowledge and experience, coupled with insights and training, to become a subject matter expert, relied upon to provide support to the overall pursuit of quality and reliability.

Reporting to the Technical Product Manager, the Technical Lead will:
- Determine root cause of component failure through the Failure Analysis process
- Prepare technical reports supporting root cause determination
- Drive reliability initiatives through the review and analysis of component & piece part failure data
- Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other technical documentation that supports the OEM remanufacturing process
- Lead or participate in Continuous Improvement initiatives to improve worker safety, manufacturing efficiency, quality, and overall margins
- Observe and document component condition upon disassembly, researching component history, analyzing individual piece parts and relating this information to the function and operation of the components
- Preserve, secure and store warranty parts to support analysis and warranty claims
- Preserve, secure and store “Watch Item” parts for furtherance to Caterpillar
- Assume responsibility for the categorization of parts to determine where financial costing will reside
- Establish and maintain a strong working relationship with Production personnel and Customer Service personnel
- Continually work to identify daily working process issues related to the failure analysis process and drive improvements
- Perform all tasks in a safe manner including Floor Level Hazard Analysis (FLHA), safety observations, other safety input
Qualifications:
- Preferred candidates will have an Engineering degree in a related discipline (Mechanical, Materials, Metallurgy)
- Registered as an E.I.T or P.Eng (or eligible therefor) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
- Engineering Technologists (RET/CET) or Heavy Duty Mechanics will be considered on a per case basis
- Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to develop subject matter expertise as relates to Struts, Cylinders and Hydraulic Systems
- Technical knowledge of Caterpillar equipment considered an asset
- Familiarity with Metallurgy principles, fracture mechanics, and coating processes such as chroming and High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) coating would be an asset
- Passion for root cause analysis with extremely high attention to detail, and working to develop technical solutions/corrective actions
- Ability to effectively communicate findings in written or verbal form
- Fully conversant with Microsoft Office environment (Word, Excel)
- Ability to interact and clearly communicate with production personnel in order to document and preserve evidence of failures
- Candidate must be able to work safely within a team environment, lead by example, and contribute to overall company safety

- Monday - Friday (5x2), potential shift requirements depending on department needs
