Position Purpose:

The Exterior Pro Product Specialist serves as the subject matter expert for framing, siding, roofing, decking, and windows/patio doors, helping Outside Sales Represent identify, quote, and close complex exterior projects while building contractor credibility through jobsite support, supplier partnerships, and category training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 50% - Customer Meetings and Quoting - Collaborate with the takeoff team, complex quoting teams, Design Connect, Virtual Apron, and Merchandising to create specific quotes for customers. Engage directly with customers on job site visits to select products, provide measurements, and support the quoting process through partnership with the Outside Sales team. Partner with Merchandising to provide solutions, including special orders, custom quotes, and direct from supplier options.

  • 25% - Product Expertise and Merchandising Selection - Ensure customer needs are met through category expertise and long-term market growth. Act as a conduit to Pro Merchandising for feedback regarding assortment and suppliers. Act as a key resource in helping customers identify the best products for their project, considering their budget, environment, and durability needs. Leverage local and special order options and work with supplier resources to obtain necessary product information.

  • 25% - Sales Support and Training - Serve as a support resource for all Outside Sales teams, offering product knowledge, supplier engagement, and post-sale support. Train and coach Outside Sales Representatives on product categories to capture additional share through complex projects. Streamline communication between Sales and Merchandising, fostering a feedback loop that improves product selection, training, and customer satisfaction. Provide expertise within key product categories within Flooring, Kitchen/Bath, Millwork, or exterior projects.

Travel Requirements:

  • Typically requires overnight travel 20% to 50% of the time.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, stooping, climbing, and lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward.

Working Conditions:

  • Usually in a comfortable environment but with regular exposure to factors causing moderate physical discomfort from such things as dust, fumes, or odors

  • Experience selling, specifying, or supporting framing, siding, roofing, decking, windows, and patio doors for residential or light commercial projects.

  • Ability to train and coach sales teams on exterior products, estimating fundamentals, and contractor-facing terminology.

  • Understanding of building codes, weatherization, and installation best practices for exterior construction projects.

  • Experience partnering with manufacturers, suppliers, or distributors to validate specifications, availability, and project requirements.

  • Ability to perform jobsite walkthroughs, review measurements, and support accurate product recommendations and quotes.

  • Working knowledge of framing systems, roofing assemblies, exterior cladding, decking, and window/door applications.

  • Experience supporting contractors, builders, remodelers, or professional customers through product selection and project planning.

  • Proven ability to develop material packages and support Outside Sales Representatives in closing complex exterior projects.

  • Prior experience in the construction, building materials, lumberyard, distributor, or home improvement industry.

  • Experience managing or supporting residential exterior construction or renovation projects.

  • Comfortable leading product knowledge and sales training sessions.

  • Strong presentation, negotiation, relationship-building, and influencing skills.
