Summary of Role

This role of an experienced defect engineer provides strategic oversight and drives best‑in‑class methodologies for advanced defect analysis, yield optimization, and process innovation across cutting‑edge Silicon Photonics technology nodes and other next‑generation semiconductor platforms. The role influences technology roadmaps, leads cross‑module integration problem‑solving, and ensures manufacturing readiness for complex nodes. The incumbent is expected to act as a subject‑matter authority, mentor engineers, and lead cross‑functional initiatives that materially impact fab performance, cost, and technology scalability.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and direction for advanced defect characterization activities, including defining methodologies for DSA and PFA across multiple process sectors.

  • Drive high‑impact Continuous Improvement (CIP) programs, leveraging advanced DOE and SPC methodologies to systematically enhance process performance and long‑term manufacturability.

  • Lead cross‑fab investigations and containment efforts, using complex data analytics to identify systemic line issues and coordinate rapid‑response solutions that minimize yield and delivery impact.

  • Serve as a strategic technical interface between development, manufacturing, and process module teams, ensuring smooth technology transfers and resolving high‑severity integration challenges.

  • Define, validate, and optimize process formulations, controls, and equipment strategies to ensure alignment with industry‑leading quality, reliability, and cost targets.

  • Develop and review high‑value technical analyses and dashboards to guide decision‑making for Silicon Photonics and other advanced technology platforms in high‑volume manufacturing.

  • Influence equipment and material qualification strategies, ensuring capability alignment with technology requirements and long‑term roadmap objectives.

  • Provide expert assessment of product development requirements, including evaluating manufacturability, cost models, cycle time impacts, and production risk.

  • Mentor and develop engineers, providing technical guidance that strengthens organizational capability and accelerates engineering growth.

  • Lead or participate in cross‑site teams, representing Fab8 or the global manufacturing network in corporate‑level yield and defect reduction initiatives.

Other Responsibilities

  • Conduct all activities in a safe and responsible manner and support all Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Required Qualifications

A technical university degree in Science, Engineering, Semiconductor Manufacturing, Mathematics, or a related discipline with the following experience:

  • BS with 6+ years of relevant experience

  • MS with 5+ years of relevant experience

  • PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience

Additional required experience:

  • Demonstrated expertise in CMOS and/or Silicon Photonics process technologies, process modules, or equipment engineering.

  • Proven track record leading complex technical problem‑solving or yield‑improvement programs.

  • Strong capability in SPC, DOE, data analytics, and structured problem‑solving methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience leading defect‑related programs or Silicon Photonics technology integration.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence organizations and drive alignment in ambiguous technical environments.

  • Proven project leadership skills with the ability to balance technical depth and cross‑functional communication.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for executive‑level reporting.

  • Advanced planning, prioritization, and organizational capabilities.

  • Experience mentoring or developing junior engineers.
