About Alberta Operations:

At Fort Saskatchewan, Dow Canada operates four world-scale production units that manufacture hydrocarbons, ethylene, polyethylene, and electricity. As one of Canada’s largest petrochemical facilities, Dow Canada plays a key role in serving our global customer base.

About the Opportunities:

In the Operator role, you will optimize plant performance at one of our facilities (Hydrocarbons, Solution Polyethylene, Gas Phase Polyethylene, Power and Utilities) by monitoring process equipment and conditions, conducting field checks, adjusting control systems manually and operating equipment based on process controls in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. This includes isolating and preparing equipment for maintenance as well as learning Dow’s Life Critical Standards to ensure the safe operation of the facility. As an Operator for Dow, you are expected to be a team player, have good prioritization and organizational skills, and demonstrate competencies in the areas of: leadership, initiative, teamwork, and interpersonal effectiveness. 

Hydrocarbons:

  • Hydrocarbon processing including fractional distillation, cracking furnaces, steam and electric turbines, cryogenic processes, water treatment, cavern storage, etc.

  • Ability in some post areas to work towards 3rd, then 2nd class certification.

  • Teams of around 10+ operators.


Solution Polyethylene:

  • Polyethylene production via reaction/catalyst in solution phase. This process includes the safe operation of flammable hydrocarbons, flash drums and vacuum system operation.

  • On shift operators can earn process time towards their 3rd class.

  • Teams of around 6 operators.


Gas Phase Polyethylene:

  • Polyethylene production via reaction/catalyst in gas phase. This process includes the safe operation of flammable hydrocarbons.

  • On shift operators have been able to get to 4th class certification via ABSA application.

  • Training will not occur in an existing facility, but rather be mainly on day shift location Fort Saskatchewan. Travel to New Orleans area and Red Deer area for extended periods will also be required (valid passport required).

  • Teams of around 4 operators.


Power and Utilities:

  • Natural Gas / hydrogen cogeneration unit operation, heat recovery steam generators and water treatment.

  • Standard All post areas can work towards 3rd, then 2nd class certification.

  • Teams of around 5 operators.


Responsibilities:

  • Prioritizes training and qualification, including setting and achieving agreed upon milestones: utilizing online Learning Management Systems (LMS), In-Plant Training modules, hands-on training, and unit Technical Training resources.

  • Works with shift team members and other shift teams to leverage skills and knowledge to balance workload ensuring assigned tasks are completed by due dates.

  • Conducts effective shift relief, as defined in facility specific operating discipline and tools, to ensure effective communication and handoff to arriving shift team. 

  • Maintains qualification in assigned areas, per facility policy, and completes training goals in a timely manner. This includes using discretionary time to continuously learn and hone skills. 

  • Mentors and trains new and existing operations personnel on process operation, troubleshooting and the use of operating discipline in alignment to plant's training process.

  • Performs Immediate Response activities, as assigned.

  • Initiates and documents preliminary investigations according to plant specific process/criteria and participates in formal and informal Root Cause Investigations for events involved in or by request.

  • Actively participates in and documents routine field safety audits / near miss entries.

  • Tracks and utilizes the plant's key performance metrics on shift that are applicable to the Operating the Plant role to optimize operations and identify improvement opportunities.

  • Uses process knowledge and skills to make improvements in plant performance and operating discipline.

  • Proactively identifies improvements and opportunities utilizing the facility improvement processes, appropriate management of change processes and communication tools.

The physical abilities, with or without reasonable accommodations, include:

  • Medically approved to respond to emergencies.

  • Physically & mentally able to work in stressful environments including, but not limited to: confined spaces, low visibility, fully encapsulated PPE, and extreme close proximity to others.

  • Physically & mentally able to work at varying heights in an emergency capacity.

  • Frequent/Occasional lifting of material weighing approximately 50lbs.

  • Must have or be willing to train towards Emergency Response Brigade including live fire and rope rescue training.

  • Wear all required personal protective equipment, including but not limited to respirator, SCBA, safety harness.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • 5 or more years of related (Operations, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Electrical) work experience.

  • Completion of ABSA 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Class.

  • A current, valid driver’s license is required.

  • Must be 18 years old or older.

  • Able to work a 12-hour rotating shift.

  • A minimum requirement for this Canada based position is the ability to work legally in Canada. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.


Preferred Skills:

  • Related two-year technical diploma, such as Chemical Engineering Technology or Power Engineering Technology.

  • Completion of Alberta 3rd Class.

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
