About the Team

The Science, Technology, and Medical Journals (STMJ) team at Elsevier is dedicated to making our journals a premier destination for authors. We collaborate with researchers to facilitate the publication of their impactful scientific discoveries, with a focus on rigorous peer review, ethics, and research integrity. In support of our portfolio of 2700+ hybrid and open access scientific journals, you will actively contribute to advancing science, improving health outcomes.

The Biochemistry portfolio, includes over 100 journals across various medical specialties predominantly around biochemistry, genetics, genomics, biotechnology, and cell biology. We support and collaborate with editors, authors, reviewers and researchers worldwide, as well as supporting a high-profile journals that are owned by societies and universities.

You will be part of the Life Sciences publishing organisation within a dedicated Biochemistry team of publishers and scientific editors responsible for over 100 hybrid and open access journals. Together, the team defines and delivers portfolio strategy, drives performance, and builds strong partnerships with editors, societies, universities, and research communities across the globe.

About the role

As Executive Publisher, you will lead the strategic development and financial performance of a broad international Biochemistry portfolio spanning biochemistry, genetics and genomics as well as interdisciplinary titles.

You will define and deliver portfolio strategy, drive performance against agreed KPIs, and ensure delivery of results within budget. You will shape portfolio direction, identify growth opportunities, and translate market trends into strategic action.

In parallel, you will act as China Strategy Lead across the wider Biochemistry portfolio. Within the framework of the Life Sciences China strategy, you will shape and implement the Biochemistry China plan, ensuring alignment with broader Life Sciences priorities and coordination across related portfolios.

This role has explicit ownership of launches and acquisitions across the portfolio, from opportunity identification and evaluation through business case development, approval, and execution.

The role reports directly to the Publishing Director and plays a visible leadership role across Life Sciences and Elsevier more broadly.

Responsibilities

Portfolio leadership

  • Lead strategic planning & portfolio development and financial performance of an international portfolio, by collaborating with strategy, marketing, society, finance, and operations.

  • Manage an international portfolio of journals/societies/editors and steer editors’ behavior and performance, implement portfolio strategies and drive growth.

  • Build and maintain a network within the international research community, engage in high-level industry discussions and translate customer trends into innovative strategies.

Launches and acquisitions

  • Own and drive portfolio expansion through launches and acquisitions.

  • Identify and evaluate opportunities, develop robust business cases, and lead execution in partnership with cross functional stakeholders.

  • Strengthen and grow the proprietary portfolio, with particular focus on high growth markets including China.

China strategy leadership

  • Define and implement the Biochemistry strategy within the Life Sciences China framework, ensuring alignment across portfolios and effective execution in partnership with China based Life Sciences leadership.

  • Build and expand a senior network across leading Chinese research institutes, editors, societies, and partners.

  • Work closely with colleagues in China and across regions to deliver shared strategic objectives.

Cross divisional initiatives and matrix leadership

  • Lead or contribute to cross divisional and complex initiatives with senior stakeholders.

  • Represent the Publishing Director and the team in department and company wide projects as needed.

  • Work through matrix leadership, partnering closely with publishers and scientific editors to align priorities and deliver high performance across shared objectives.

  • Coach and support colleagues, contributing to team capability and collaborative success.

Requirements

  • Significant publishing experience with deep understanding of journal development and strong knowledge of the global publishing landscape and research policy environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives and deliver commercial outcomes through data driven decision making, budget ownership, and KPI management.

  • Proven track record in identifying and developing new opportunities, including launches and acquisitions.

  • Ability to build and sustain high level relationships within the international scientific community and translate customer needs into strategic action.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence across a matrix organisation and engage effectively at all levels.

  • A collaborative mindset and ability to work across functions, cultures, and geographies.
