THE OPPORTUNITY

Executive Editor, Picture Books & Novelty, will identify, acquire, and develop high-quality and commercial picture books, board books, and novelty books for the Children’s Book Group, under the direction of the Editorial Director, with a goal of fulfilling revenue growth and developing opportunities for IP exploitation across all divisions of the company.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acquire and edit 15-20 titles per year, focusing primarily on commercially-driven picture books and novelty. Proactively identify, evaluate, and pursue opportunities for new publishing and development/adaptation of existing IP.

  • Manage all stages of each title’s print/digital lifecycle, including review of all passes; coordination with production, design, and freelancers; drafting of copy and metadata; and maintenance of reprints/backlist.

  • Collaborate cross-departmentally with marketing, publicity, sales, sub rights, and others. Work inter-divisionally with Scholastic Reading Events (Book Fairs) to maximize commercial opportunities and meet corporate business goals.

  • Establish and develop relationships with literary agents, author, illustrators, and other partners. Negotiate terms directly with agents, licensors, packagers, and international publishers.

  • Responsible for title-level P&L creation to meet profitability metrics for picture books.

  • Attend conferences and trade shows as needed and lead internal/external presentations.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong editorial judgment, creative vision, and knowledge of market trends and emerging voices for 0-8 publishing

Ability to leverage agent and author relationships to secure key projects.

Excellent communication and project management skills, including attention to detail and follow up. Ability to meet deadlines and maintain publishing schedules, as well as to prioritize and multi-task across several projects simultaneously.
