GENERAL INTRODUCTION: 

 

The Archbishop, visible principle of unity in his archdiocese, is called to build up the particular Church unceasingly in the communion of all its members, and to ensure that their diverse gifts and ministries, in union with the universal Church, serve to build up all the faithful and to spread the Gospel. (Apostolorum Successores 8).  He must take care that all the affairs which belong to the administration of the whole archdiocese are duly coordinated and are ordered to attain more suitably the good of the portion of the people of God entrusted to him.” (Apostolorum Successores 177). 

 

Each position employed in the Chancery helps to extend the ministry of the Archbishop in particular ways as outlined in the position description. 

 

NOTE:  This is an appointed position by the Ordinary of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle and subject to Archdiocesan Policy pertaining to appointed positions.  The supervisor of this position reserves the right to make necessary modifications to this position to reflect current and appropriate responsibilities in accordance with the direction of the Archbishop. 

 

GENERAL SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE: 

 

Provides leadership, supervision, and strategy for the Office of the Vicar General (OVG).  Collaborates with the Vicar General in overseeing the pastoral ministries of the chancery, specifically all ministries situated within the Department of Lifelong Formation, the Department of Intercultural Integration, and the Department of Pastoral Care & Outreach.  Manages OVG’s staff and overall operations.  Serves as a member of the Chancery Senior Leadership Team (SLT), assisting with pastoral and strategic planning for the archdiocese.   

 

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES: 

 

  1. Collaborates with the Vicar General in all matters related to the pastoral ministries of the chancery.  Develops strategies for effectively serving parishes, schools, cultural communities, and marginalized communities throughout the entire archdiocese.  Develops strategies for OVG’s internal practices and structures, assuring effective and efficient ministerial operations.  Oversees three distinct pastoral departments: Lifelong Formation, Intercultural Integration, and Pastoral Care & Outreach.      

 

  1. Manages, oversees, and provides direction for OVG’s office staff and field staff.  Directly supervises the Director of Lifelong Formation, Director of Intercultural Integration, Director of Pastoral Care & Outreach, and OVG’s Administrative Coordinator.  Provides mentoring, consultation, and support to all staff members, assuring a positive, collaborative, faith-filled work environment where teamwork flourishes and all can develop/advance.  Responsible for hiring, training, evaluating and, as necessary, terminating staff.   

 

  1. Facilitates regular all-team meetings including setting agendas, celebrating mission moments, and ensuring interdepartmental collaboration across the chancery.  Assures a coherent annual event calendar and works with Communications to effectively promote all pastoral opportunities for parishes, schools, cultural communities, marginalized communities, and the Catholic faithful at-large. Organizes social and prayer experiences for OVG team members to further connect and cooperate.               

 

  1. Directly serves ministries, as needed, within OVG.  Spearheads occasional projects or provides direct ministry in the areas of Lifelong Formation, Intercultural Integration, and Pastoral Care & Outreach.  This could involve providing direct pastoral care to people impacted by difficult situations (e.g. persons impacted by hospitalization, incarceration, mental illness, etc.), supporting a cultural community in need, and/or addressing needs related to faith formation/lay minister formation, etc.  

 

  1. Collaborates with the Vicar General to ensure the ongoing implementation of Partners in the Gospel. Serves as a member of the Partners in the Gospel Management Team, and Steering Committee.         

 

  1. Participates as a member of the Chancery Senior Leadership Team (SLT), assisting with pastoral and strategic planning for chancery operations and the archdiocese as a whole.  Participates in other chancery groups and attends to all related action items. (e.g. Chancery Core, Racial Justice & Equity Committee, Development Committee, Ad-hoc committees, etc.)  Collaborates regularly with other offices, departments, and ministries in the archdiocese to collectively achieve our mission. (Mt. 28) Nurtures archdiocesan relations with ecumenical and interfaith partners.   

 

  1. Collaborates with the Development Department to assist with fundraising efforts for the chancery’s ministerial operations.  Relays stories and ministerial impact at fundraising events.  Meets 1:1 with potential donors.  Garners support for the Annual Catholic Appeal through speaking engagements at Masses, presentations at parishes and schools, and other venues.       

 

  1. Offers retreats, training, workshops, publications, and other offerings for parishes, schools, cultural communities, and marginalized communities.  Consults regularly with parish and school ministers on their formation, cultural, and outreach endeavors.  Connects constituents with resources to better enable their local missions.        

 

  1. Provides prompt, caring, and courteous customer service to parish and school staff and to the Catholic faithful at-large, meeting needs and answering questions as quickly and effectively as possible.       

 

  1. Assures effective stewardship of chancery resources through prudent budget and grant management.  

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Primary:   

  1. Willingness and ability to support the mission of the Church by extending the ministry of the Archbishop. 
  2. Ability and desire to use God-given gifts and talents in service of the local Church in support of pastoral ministry and the collaboration between lay and ordained Ministers. 
  3. Active member of a parish/faith community in good standing with the Church. 

 

Education: 

  1. Master's degree in religious education, theology, pastoral studies or equivalent. 
  2. Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalent preferred. 

 

Experience: 

  1. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in pastoral ministry and executive leadership.  
  2. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. (i.e. Word, Excel, and Outlook, etc.) 
  3. Experience in supervising and supporting staff.  

 

Other Elements: 

  1. Strong working knowledge of Catholic parish structures and organizations. 
  2. Ability to develop and deploy high-level strategy and oversight.  
  3. Experience working with diverse populations and community groups. 
  4. Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects. 
  5. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. 
  6. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.  Able to facilitate meetings, conduct oral presentations, or write documents. 
  7. Detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy. 
  8. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed. 
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  10. Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and be able to travel throughout the archdiocese. 
  11. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus. 

Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
