Job Description
Reporting to the Managing Director of Listed Sustainable Energy (“SEG”), the Analyst is accountable for assisting the Listed Sustainable Energies team in the identification, evaluation, and analysis of public energy opportunities. The global mandate covers investments in traditional energy and renewable energy companies.
The fundamental goal of the Listed SEG program is to enhance the risk and return characteristics of CPP Investments overall SEG portfolio. This will be achieved in two main ways: by gaining exposure to sectors or countries underrepresented in the SEG portfolio; and by investing into situations where a desired SEG exposure is fundamentally cheaper in the public market than in the private market.
What you will do:
- Research, analyze, underwrite, and evaluate a variety of potential listed energy opportunities
- Compile industry, market and asset level data and financial information
- Build complex dynamic financial models to analyze investment opportunities (reviewing investment structures and specific assets using financial models and a variety of quantitative analytical tools to test assumptions and sensitivities)
- Assist in the preparation and presentation of Investment Committee memoranda; participate in Investment Committee discussions.
- Participate in the monitoring and management of the investment portfolio through formal semi-annual reviews and other informal meetings.
- Compile data and financial information as needed to assist in managing the listed energy portfolio.
- Benchmark investment performance and prepare reports for senior management.
- Interact seamlessly with the listed real assets, strategy, and private asset teams. Knowledge sharing and a strong working relationship between public and private is critical.
- Collaborate, where appropriate, with teams in credit, public equities, and other business areas.
- Willingness and interest in working across multiple energy sectors (power and renewables, energy midstream, commodities and alternative fuels, and distributed energy and services) and geographies.
- Other relevant duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Up to three years of relevant work experience in the energy and renewables sector; prior experience in public energy and / or renewables is preferred.
- Relevant experience may include asset management, valuation, investment banking, equity research or similar; strong accounting knowledge would be an advantage.
- Developed and emerging market experience are both of interest.
- Undergraduate business, finance, or economics degree – B.A., B.S. or equivalent.
- CPA, CFA or CFA Candidate would be an advantage.
- Strong quantitative, financial, and analytical skills (DCF and financial modelling).
- Knowledge of the listed energy sector, including key subsectors such as power and renewables, energy midstream, commodities and alternative fuels, and distributed energy and services. Global or multi-regional experience preferred.
- Solid understanding of MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint), Bloomberg, Capital IQ and other financial data portals.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to build working relationships internally and externally.
- Multilingualism may be advantageous.
- Ability to apply consistent investment judgement and to discern and focus on what is important.
- Team player who enjoys a high performing culture.
- Demonstrated adaptability, flexibility, and initiative.
- Willingness and ability to travel.
- Desire to learn, express opinions and be inquisitive. Ability to make decisions.
- Exemplify our Guiding Principles of Integrity, Partnership and High Performance.
