Position Summary
Johnson Controls is seeking a highly motivated HVAC Equipment Systems Application Engineer to support the development and execution of building systems and equipment projects. This position is responsible for providing technical and engineering support throughout both the pre-sales and post-sales phases, ensuring successful project delivery and customer satisfaction.
Pre-sales phase; the Equipment Systems Application Engineer receives guidance from branch leadership and Account Sales Executives to support customer requirements and sales objectives. Responsibilities include equipment and controls selection, system application support, design validation, estimating, proposal development, basis-of-design support, and bid pricing.
Post-sales phase; the Equipment Systems Application Engineer manages the execution of assigned equipment projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements, project schedules, customer expectations, and financial goals. The role is responsible for developing technical documentation, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and delivering successful project outcomes while balancing customer satisfaction and profitability. This position is based in Indianapolis, Indiana, and operates under a hybrid work model. Candidates must be within commuting distance or willing to relocate.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Sales Support
Provide technical application support, equipment selection, and estimating assistance for project opportunities.
Support development of customer solutions, business cases, and recommendations.
Collaborate with Account Executives to establish project basis of design, including equipment selections, specifications, sequences, drawings, and document reviews.
Assist with project scope development, pricing, and proposal preparation.
Prepare takeoffs, RFQs, RFIs, and technical documentation.
Respond to HVAC equipment, controls, and system application inquiries.
Project Execution & Management
Manage equipment projects from order release through startup and project closeout.
Maintain accountability for project profitability, customer satisfaction, and execution performance.
Coordinate project schedules, backlog, and forecasting activities.
Review contract documents, drawings, and specifications to develop engineered submittals.
Configure equipment and validate performance in accordance with engineering standards.
Verify approved submittals prior to equipment release for manufacturing.
Evaluate scope changes, schedule impacts, and customer directives.
Coordinate equipment releases, deliveries, and supplier activities.
Identify and manage change order opportunities.
Process factory equipment orders and field-procured materials.
Track materials, equipment, and project deliverables.
Review vendor invoices for technical and contractual accuracy.
Support startup activities and resolve delivery or scope-related issues.
Conduct site visits as required to support project execution.
Customer & Stakeholder Management
Develop and maintain professional relationships with customers, consultants, contractors, subcontractors, and internal teams.
Participate in project and customer coordination meetings.
Communicate project status, financial performance, risks, and milestones.
Coordinate customer training and turnover activities.
Support billing, invoicing, and collection efforts.
Ensure compliance with contractual requirements, company standards, and execution processes.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Teams.
Working knowledge of Windows operating systems.
Experience with Nitro PDF writer or equivalent.
Basic knowledge of thermodynamics and HVAC principles.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of HVAC equipment and systems.
AutoCAD experience.
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $67,900 - $93,400 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.)
