SierTeK Ltd. is seeking an Epidemiologist to support an opportunity at Wright Patterson AFB, OH.
Position Overview Section
The Epidemiologist supports the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM), Aerospace Medicine Studies and Analysis Division (FES), by conducting advanced epidemiological research, health surveillance, and statistical analyses that improve force health protection, operational readiness, and human performance. This position analyzes complex health, personnel, operational, and deployment-related datasets to identify trends, evaluate programs, and provide evidence-based recommendations that support Air Force leadership and public health decision-making.
Essential Job Functions
Epidemiological Research & Analysis
- Design, conduct, and lead epidemiological analyses of health surveillance, medical, personnel, operational, and deployment-related data supporting Air Force health and readiness initiatives.
- Perform statistical analyses to evaluate human performance, operational readiness, population health, and program effectiveness.
- Develop innovative analytical approaches to address complex public health and operational research questions.
- Assist in developing statistical models that examine relationships between health outcomes, operational factors, and military populations.
- Perform model validation and verification to ensure analytical accuracy and reliability.
Data Management & Integration
- Retrieve, integrate, and manage health information, personnel, deployment, and operational datasets from multiple military data sources.
- Collect data from approved databases and repositories in accordance with government data-sharing agreements.
- Establish relationships between disparate datasets through data mapping and integration.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive data dictionaries, metadata, and data architecture documentation.
- Document analytical programming code and data processing procedures in accordance with USAFSAM programming standards.
Statistical Programming & Analytics
- Perform statistical analyses using:
- SAS
- SAS Enterprise Guide
- Create analytical datasets and maintain data files supporting epidemiological studies.
- Apply descriptive and inferential statistical methods to evaluate health surveillance data.
- Develop visual analytics and data products that communicate effectively to stakeholders.
- Learn and apply emerging analytical tools, including Tableau, Python, R, SAS Viya, Qualtrics, and Envision, as required.
Scientific Communication
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, memoranda, and other written products summarizing research findings and analytical results.
- Present study findings through briefings, technical reports, scientific meetings, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Assist with preparation of conference presentations, scientific posters, and manuscripts.
- Support knowledge transfer activities by developing documentation and briefing materials for USAFSAM leadership and Air Force stakeholders.
Collaboration & Program Support
- Serve as a subject matter expert in epidemiology and health statistics on multidisciplinary teams.
- Collaborate with researchers, clinicians, analysts, and government stakeholders to support public health surveillance and operational research.
- Interface regularly with USAFSAM/FES leadership and technical staff.
- Obtain and maintain required permissions for access to military health and personnel databases.
- Demonstrate familiarity with Air Force medical, personnel, and operational record systems and associated data repositories.
Minimum Position Requirements
- Master's degree (MPH or MS) or Ph.D. in:
- Epidemiology
- Statistics
- Data Science
- Bioinformatics
- Or a closely related quantitative discipline approved by USAFSAM/FES.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience performing statistical analyses in public health or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience designing and leading analyses of health surveillance, medical, personnel, or operational datasets.
- Advanced analytical skills, including population health analytics and health surveillance visualization.
- Experience conducting epidemiological studies focused on reducing adverse health outcomes and improving force readiness.
- Proficiency with:
- SAS
- SAS Enterprise Guide
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Adobe Acrobat
- Current HIPAA training or the ability to maintain HIPAA compliance for access to protected health information.
- Ability to learn emerging analytical technologies including Tableau, Python, R, SAS Viya, Qualtrics, and Envision.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary research environments.
- Ability to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
Highly Desired Qualifications
- Board Certification in Public Health.
- Experience supporting Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, or other federal public health organizations.
- Experience working with Air Force medical, personnel, operational, or health surveillance databases.
- Experience using advanced data visualization and business intelligence tools.
- Experience publishing scientific manuscripts and presenting research at professional conferences.
- Familiarity with military public health surveillance, operational medicine, and force health protection programs.
