Job Description
In joining the Assystem Environment Consents & Engagement Practice as an Environmental Consultant, you will form part of our established Environmental Management service offering.
Initial role would be as an onsite Environmental Manager for EA2 Onshore Substation project, as part of infrastructure development that will boost offshore wind power energy production. In particular, the role will involve:
- Supporting the completion, submission and assurance of environmental consents / permits including discharge consents
- Authoring and updating the Construction Environmental Management Plan, as well as linked discipline plans
- Supporting project ecologists, so to raise awareness of site constraints and mitigations
- Liaison with local stakeholders, local authority, Environment Agency, contractors or consultants
- Supporting the site to ensure duty of care for waste, including review of waste transfer notes / hazardous waste, reporting of waste volumes, segregation of waste on site, organising and reviewing results from waste testing (WAC tests)
- Advising the project team on all environmental risks and compliance for the site, attend regular update meeting and leading on environmental updates / progress
- Attending regular site environmental inspections and targeted audits, occasionally with the client or project team to identify and mitigate any environmental risks including pollution prevention with spill kits or plant nappies
- Provide toolbox talks and training to project team to raise awareness on environmental matters e.g. Presence of Great Crested Newts and Spill Kit Training
- Reporting and investigating any incidents or near misses, and raising and closing any actions
Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum associate membership of a relevant professional institute (e.g. IEMA, CIEEM)
- An appreciation of the significant environmental risks and opportunities of one or more of the construction, infrastructure, property or energy sectors
- Ability to adapt to our clients’ environments, working individually and as part of a team; and lead develop, manage and motivate teams in a changing environment
- Possess a good level of interpersonal skill, both verbal and written, including problem solving and negotiating skills, management of meetings and presentations
- Computer literate and a strong ability in using the Microsoft Office suite of products
- Self-motivated and able to work on own initiative
- Able to manage numerous activities / different projects simultaneously - both short and long term
- Able to create and maintain strong client relationships
Desirable:
- Full membership of a relevant professional institute (e.g. IEMA, CIEEM) / Chartered Environmentalist, or working towards
- Masters degree in a relevant subject
- Work experience in one or more of construction, infrastructure, property or energy sector
Typical Work Activities / Key Accountabilities:
Consultants are likely to work independently on projects or as part of multi-disciplinary team, taking responsibility for managing their own tasks effectively. Support will be available as required from specialists and more senior consultants.
Tasks and responsibilities will vary depending on the client and the nature and stage of the project being worked on. It may be required to work on multiple projects and with multiple clients simultaneously.
Key tasks will be in one or more of the service areas below, depending on need, qualifications and experience:
- Environmental project management: leading site inspections and compliance audits; developing and implementing management processes; interpreting performance data and communicating results; managing consents processes; advising project teams and influencing senior management on environmental issues; liaising with regulators and other stakeholders
- Sustainability strategy: conducting sustainability appraisals, including the use of tools like BREEAM Infrastructure; developing and implementing action plans for project objectives; leading design reviews to enhance sustainable, innovative options using a whole-life perspective
- Environmental management system (EMS) development: taking a leading role working with organisations to achieve an effective, certified EMS (to e.g. ISO14001); implementing new policies and procedures; managing auditing regimes; rolling out communication and training plans
- Environmental impact assessment (EIA): Review and draft EIA chapters, or co-ordinating the process, to support planning applications
- Ecology services: assisting ecologists with habitat and protected species field surveys; report writing; analysing data; and managing sub-contractors
- Environmental Permitting: Managing and obtaining environmental consents including Environment Agency permits and Section 61 Control of Pollution Act
Undertaking any other duties appropriate to the post including business development activities and bid writing
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in a relevant subject.
