World Vision Uganda is seeking to partner with Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries(MAAIF) to implement the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project (UCSATP) in the refugee settlements in northern Uganda (Adjumani or Lamwo).
The Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project seeks to transform agricultural production systems among refugee and host communities through climate-smart agriculture while strengthening resilience, livelihoods and food security.
To implement this project, World Vision Uganda is prepositioning staffing needs, who will be on standby for hire, dependent on WVU being awarded the consultancy.
Purpose of the role:
The Entomologist will provide technical leadership in the development and implementation of climate-smart insect-based livelihood interventions under the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project. The position will focus on promoting sustainable insect value chains, particularly Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production and beekeeping/apiculture, to enhance food security, nutrition, income generation, environmental sustainability, and livelihood resilience among refugee and host communities.
The Entomologist will support beneficiary groups in adopting innovative insect farming technologies, value addition, and market linkages while ensuring adherence to climate-smart agricultural principles.
Reports to: Project Manager
Duty station: Adjumani / Lamwo - Uganda (Refugee Settlements and Host Communities).
Key Result Areas:
Technical Program Implementation
- Lead the implementation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) and beekeeping interventions within the project.
- Promote climate-smart insect farming technologies and sustainable production systems.
- Support the establishment and management of BSF production units, apiaries, and demonstration sites.
- Develop and disseminate technical guidelines on insect production, harvesting, processing, and utilization.
- Promote innovative insect-based enterprises that contribute to livelihoods, animal feed production, and environmental conservation.
- Support value addition initiatives for honey, beeswax, propolis, BSF larvae, and other insect-derived products.
Capacity Building and Extension Services
- Train farmers, refugee groups, youth groups, and cooperatives on BSF production and beekeeping technologies.
- Develop and conduct farmer field demonstrations, field days, and hands-on practical training.
- Promote best practices in apiary management, colony management, honey harvesting, and processing.
- Build capacity of community extension workers and lead farmers in insect value chain development.
- Provide routine technical support and mentorship to project beneficiaries.
Enterprise Development and Market Linkages
- Support formation and strengthening of insect value chain groups and cooperatives.
- Facilitate market linkages for honey, beeswax, BSF products, and related enterprises.
- Promote business development services and entrepreneurship among beneficiaries.
- Support value chain assessments and identification of emerging market opportunities.
Refugee and Host Community Engagement
- Facilitate inclusive participation of refugees and host communities in project
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in any of the following fields:
- Entomology
- Crop protection
- Zoology
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years' proven experience in development or humanitarian projects.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing climate-smart insect-based livelihood interventions.
- Experience in promoting sustainable insect value chains, particularly Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production and beekeeping/apiculture.
- Experience working in refugee settings, refugee-hosting communities, or humanitarian contexts is highly preferred.
- Experience in implementing innovative insect farming technologies, value addition, and market linkages.
